MAJ L&YR Van - Guidance please

Recommended Posts

Whilst browsing my book Lancashire and Yorkshire Wagons Volume Two today, I came across a photo on page 232 of Dia. 82 Covered Goods Van 135974 in LMS Bauxite livery and still with it's roof rollback still intact.

I've attached a few photos of a MAJ L&YR van in my collection that I think would make a suitable candidate to portray 135974. While I know the brakes aren't the same as the ones in the photo and the angled wooden planks at both ends need adding, I'm not sure whether this van would be correct. If it helps, the wheelbase on the OO model is 5 and half centimetres.

Can anyone with a good knowledge on L&YR wagons please help me out...? If the wagon in the photos isn't right, I have a unbuilt MAJ kit that can be built. The only question would be, would I need to build the van on a 12ft or 10ft underframe?

Hi Gareth,

From memory the MAJ instructions cover both the variation with roof hatch, end stanchions, fitted or unfitted and which wheelbase.

I have built a few of this diagram from the MAJ kit - but a long time ago!

I still have them - just don't ask where and which stock box.

I built them with 10" wheelbase.

The L&Y Society doesn't have this wagon drawing as a download but I did get the drawing from them back in the 80's.

There is a side on photo for you to look at though.

Thanks

Edit - On checking I find I have one left and it has a 10ft wheelbase.

Now looking for the instructions which had a fair bit of history in them.
