The Pas-Pukatawagan

Is the passenger service from The Pas, Manitoba to Pukatawagan still operating? The VIA website seems to suggest that it is, yet whatever date you put in, it says "Train not operating'. It's one of two Native-owned lines with a passenger service, the other being in Northern Quebec. Really remote railroading but almost impossible to access.

It's also shown on the map in the Via pocket timetable for June 2015 , but no timetable is shown for it. Given that Canada has been cancelling lightly used passenger trains , I reckon they've quietly closed it. Clearly everyone there drives , just like the Ontario Northland , the Algoma Central etc etc....

Not run by VIA per say, but by the Keewatin Railway Company (its a bit of a weird setup, Via Equipment, KRC crews, Via Ticketing but done by KRC) - http://www.krcrail.ca/

Never let facts get in the way of making a point.  ONR's passenger service wasn't cut because of light ridership, but political money reasons.  The Algoma Central's non-Agawa Canyon Tour service is more down to CN trying to kill it through neglect and disinterest rather than a lack of demand, though that service runs through such isolated areas that it was never going to be a big money maker no matter how essential the service is to the remote camps and communities it served.

Their website is a confusing mess. The train schedules show two scheduled intermediate station stops, only one of which is shown on their route map*. It appears that it runs on a 5-day scedule (weekdays?), to Pukatawagan on day 1 an 4 and to The Pas on day 2 and 5. Their link to 'Book Fairs<sic>' takes you to a generic page that says 'Passenger ticket services are provided by Via Rail Canada, through KRC. To book travel on The Pas-Pukatawagan route, contact the Keewatin Railway Company at (204) 623-5255.'

*The less said about the route map presentation the better.

It would appear that the KRC owns the track north of Sheritt Junction up to Lynn Lake, although it appears that the Puktawagan-Lynn Lake section isn't in use, while the section south of Sheritt Junction is owned by the Hudson's Bay Railway.
