"handedness" in layouts

I once read an interesting book on aircraft carrier design and after extensive tests in  the 1920s and 1930s it was found that if a pilot overshot the wires for some reason as he pulled up he would almost in every case bank to the left which is why pretty much all aircraft carriers have the island in the right as you approach the flight deck from the stern.

 

   In the 1930 the Japanese built two aircraft carries of identical design except one had the island on the left and the other on the right there thinking that they could operate along side each other with each air arm not interfering with the other - It didn't work.

 

   I don't know why I've posted this here it just seemed rather interesting..... sorry
