1970's mixed fitted freight

Recommended Posts

I am looking for inspiration!  I am assembling a mixed fitted freight and I am trying to make it as varied and interesting as possible. I have started off with a five pack of cemflows, to which have been added a couple of vans,  a 21 ton open wagon and a pair of bolsters carrying a pipe load. I want to add two or three lowmacs, but perhaps with an unusual but contemporary load. The standard crate does not really do it for me, They are machinery wagons I want some machinery!  I also want something that would be out of gauge if it was not on the lowmac. A Ford D-series chassis/cab or tractor unit or similar would fit the bill but there does not seem to be much around. Next option would be a MF135 tractor from Oxford Diecast which would be quite nice, but rather a small/lightweight load for a 24 ton capacity wagon! I know that there is the Airfix JCB which I quite like but that is more 1960's than 1970's and I would like to represent something new being delivered, and something a bit more original too!

So how many different types of wagon can I get away with mixing and what loads to put in/on them?

I remember seeing 'muck spreaders' on a fairly regular basis in the west country in the mid 1970s.

I don't know of a suitable model, but here are some on a train in 1974.

You should also have some 16t mins or 21t hops of coal as they were pretty common.

cheers

Oxford do a hay baler, which could travel on a Lowfit or Lowmac. Other possibilities for Lowmacs might be military 'soft tops' such as Landrovers (also on Lowfits) or Bedford GS 4-tonners, or civilian ambulances, such as the Bedford one that Oxford do. These latter were sent from Fratton (Portsmouth) to ambulance authorites throughout the UK, and the traffic lasted until almost the end of vac-fitted mixed freights.

Big wooden crates, usually covered with arcane symbols and script, were often to be seen, carried in Pipes, Tubes and HighFits, bound for establishments belonging to the Grey Funnel Line.

The one vehicle I'd love to see in 4mm is the Invacar.

Oft seen on Lowfits:

70s mixed workings - 12t vans, Covhops, grains, presflos/twins, pipes, tubes, plates, bobols, lowfits, Conflat Ls, fitted 16t mins or 21t hops, highs and lowmacs all fitted, trailed by unfitted mins - 16t, 21t, 21t hops, unfitted bobols, plates, finished off with a brake van. Not unusual for there to be more than 1 brake van either, mixed into the train.

Very occasionally, you might get a parcel van, even a passenger coach in transit. Or a de-rodded 03 or 08 being tripped to works for overhaul.

A very useful list, I remember those Invacars, or 'Biddymobiles' as I used to call them.

I found this site which looks like it could be good for farm machinery, although most seems to be 1/32 scale there does seem to be an interesting variety in HO/OO scale:

I have yet to browse through the whole site as there is quite a lot to get through, but no 1970's muck spreader unfortunately!
