David Todd
Good Morning David, Thanks for the continuing updates. I've really enjoyed watching this job progress and will quite miss it when it's completed. Do you think the back-filling behind the landward wall has a practical purpose, or is it just a tidying-up exercise? John I was expecting it to be left unfilled - as a trough into which any falls of cliff material (chalk and/or vegetable matter) might drop rather than bounce across onto the tracks now it is filled in. IIRC on the former Midland mainline there was such a trough at the bottom of the limestone cutting face alongside the down running line between Monsale Dale viaduct and Millers Dale station in between the tunnels . dh As far as I am aware, John, just infilled, when they find a lid for the inspection entry to the new built culvert. Note, the landward wall, it has sockets for post's, either mesh, or lap boarding fencing to erect, yet. P1500943 by David Todd 2012, on Flickr P1500955 by David Todd 2012, on Flickr P1500963 by David Todd 2012, on Flickr I wonder if they'r going to pre-assemble track sections to a rail length and then 'walk' them into the site? Also I wonder if those rectangular things they were casting a while back are now something to do with the footbridge rather than the drain? 1.They are, taking out, quite a few wooden sleeper's in the area, the concrete one's are laid across the track's, or are they re using them ? David Todd
The Last Post of the Day. I am still scratching my head over this. Initially started, with replacing wooden sleeper's, but now ? RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted August 5, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 5, 2016 I expect the wooden sleepers are to go over 'something' where a more flexible loading is required than the deadweight of concrete sleepers. Possible contenders being the transition from 'solid ground' to viaduct (or vice versa, or both) and possibly at the joints between the viaduct sections - most likely the former i would hazard a guess. The wooden sleepers will probably also be a bit easier to pack which might initially be more frequently required at the transition spots. I'm still wondering what is going to happen at the joints between the viaduct sections - surely not just bits if timber packing?

All lot of concrete sleeper's have been laid out,on what is left of the down line,to a ballast track crossing. two section's of wooden sleep's,have been added to the mix. Two very long length's of rail were delivered last week, sitting in the up line track's(seaward). David Todd
Proposed, ballast and track,on the Rafts. As to the new footbridge, listed as the "last" part of the construction. I doubt very much that the spans, will not be fitted until the ballast, track and fencing, also any other work is completed. Don't need any dings in the span,so bad, that another has to be ordered.
jukebox
Not sure - dt - it could be an access issue; a lot easier to use road cranes sat on the deck of the raft to lift the stairs and spans in. Once the ballast goes in, that's a lot less stable for the cranes. The logistics of getting the spans in place once the trackwork starts might trump the need to be careful with them once installed...
