A passing loop on a single line - do you use catch points at each end ?

Hello, here is a question that I hope someone may know the answer to, if you have a passing loop on a single line, do you use catch points at each end on the loop line ? or if the loop is controlled by a local signal box within view of the loop, is the box enough just on it's own to control the loop points ?

 

Hope that's makes sense, as I don't have time to put a diagram up yet.
