Second generation BR Type 4 prototype & production diesels

But why was two engines per loco dismissed so readily? Two engines per train worked exceptionally well with the HSTs......

Wonder if the cancellelation of the final 20 Peaks, in favour of Co-Cos, though using the CP electrics already ordered, really swung it for Brush?

Just to clarify Peter, the last batch of Peaks were fitted with Brush not CP equipment. It was the 20 sets of that order that were diverted to become the Class 47s. There had been a tender exercise to decide whose equipment would be fitted in that batch of then 56 locos, which Brush won in May 1960. This order was later increased by 10 sets by reducing the order to CP by the same amount. Thus at the time the decision was made to divert 20 sets of equipment from Peaks to a new loco design, Brush were contracted to supply 66 sets of equipment.

Just moving the topic onto the Class 50s.

As we know they were originally hired to BR, with each loco having a small oval plate on the side reading "This locomotive is the property of English Electric Holdings Limited".

Does anyone know the date when these locos became BR property? Was it one date for the whole class, or separate dates for each loco when they came off hire?

Just noticed this query, I remembered posting details in an old thread about the 50s:

The date quoted of 1973, I am unsure about. The Class 47 Preservation Project Archive has a picture of 50001 after an overhaul at Crewe and it clearly has the on hire plate in place. I was always under the impression they were removed as soon as the locos came off hire (whenever that was).

I don't have any other literature to check, but the BR database has D401 renumbered to 50001 in January '73. Is the photo you've seen dated at all?

As an aside, while searching online, found this:

According to Roger Harris's book, D401 was renumbered to be 50001 in Feb 1974. January 1973 seems way too early for me.
