Decoders with KA capacitors - A word of caution

Recommended Posts

Just finished fitting my 4th TCS WOWsound decoder. Initial testing was done at stages of fitting.

Wired motor - tested OK

Wired 3 LED's on different function wires test OK

Wired up speakers plugged in connector. (this has the KA wired) .  Applied power to the track and KA capacitor exploded and caught fire.

The cap is rated 16v and the DCC system is a Powercab with 15volt supply so no more than 14.5 volt to track.

Fortunately the body shell was not on so no damage done,

So my advice is always test before putting the body back on.
