Grizz
Good evening all. I have recently been inspired by Beast66606’s thread on the subject of JRA wagons. Some really good quality photos of some of the work worn prototypes, with loads of clear details. IMHO this thread is well worth a look, particularly if you are into air braked box open wagons. A classic French wagon design with quite a long life span so far and a interesting history with wide ranging route use. So thoroughly enthused by this thread, it has prompted me to build a batch of 10. I’ve chosen to mount them on some of the last remaining RTR Bachmann Y25s that I bought as a total bargain, without wheels and couplings, from Peter’s Spares around 10 years ago. By the Gods I so wish I’d had the vision to have bought loads more at the time, but heyho hindsight and all that…. That said it might possibly be better to use some of Kernow’s spare bogies that go under their JIA China Clay Hoppers, but they are reasonably expensive. The other component that I am going to eventually run out of is the brilliant Genesis Kits’ white metal rectangle buffers, sadly Genesis Kits no longer exists and again I wish I’d order several hundred more buffers, just to see me through my modelling whims until my death. This might now finally force me to get around to downloading some design software and 3D printing my own buffers and head stocks. As per usual I’m using various styrene sheets for the main box and then Evergreen sections, as best that will match, for the details. I’ve built just 2 JRAs in the past, so I have some experience, but here is the progress so far with the latest ones. This is wagon 1, which is the most progressed so far. But it still requires loads more of the detailing to make it look the the prototype. Once the batch is finish I will then try to attempt to pick one at a time to number then detail some of the repairs and damage done to the real wagons. Fingers crossed that will work out. As usual I am using the absolutely fantastic book by John. L. Fox, Railway Wagon Plans - 1960 to the Present. The two photos below show the drawings which I am working with, together with the detailed photos on Beast66606’s thread and some photos of my own. Cheers All, Grizz… 3
Fat Controller
I think George Ansell of S-Kits may do the rectangular-head buffers.
Marcoblanco
Wahh youre running out of bogies!! Lets hope DEMU is back on this year as George owes me a few bogies!! surely we are back to normal.. By June I will have recovered from my outlay of the Bachmann deluxe 47.. 300 quid on a model train.. I shudder to think what my mum would think if she knew id spent that much on a model train !! lol!

Anyways I'm attempting the Brett bogie hopper PHA thingy majig'( sea dredged aggregates hopper) . Rare and unusual.. some detail to add.. Grizz
Got bored and built a one off, a while ago. Finally managed to get in varnished and transferred up. Not anything prototypical but just a generic open wagon and it definitely is not prototypical paint job. It has a JNA designation with, yep you’ve guessed it, TF25 bogies. It’ll probably remain in ex works gloss condition, as a one off it’ll work better that way with other wagons of its type. The next in line, behind some 30 plus MK2 coaches, which need laser glazing, and some fictitious MK6 Intercity Sleepers made from a load of Hornby MK4 DVTs, will be those JRAs I built in Denmark last year. 9
Marcoblanco
keep on it Grizz.. can we see your JRAs please.. I want to see if mine are as good as yours!!
Grizz
Marco, hope all well with you bud? It has been a while since both of us have been on here. I’ll have to go and find them. And at this point I must confess that they aren’t finished. I suspect that might most of them are still in bubble wrap, boxed up from when I came back from Denmark in February 2022. Although having said that I did find three of them on a shelf in my work last week, undecorated and with no bogies fitted. Work keeps getting in the way. Marcoblanco
been knocking out some kits last year or so , mostly parkside... although recent months not much happening as to cold in the Layout room! Trying to keep money back for the Trains , decoders etc!! Maybe Il make it to Burton this year, but I said that last year after its return and alas work took over. Im keen to try this bluetooth once the Android App is out and the weather warms up a bit!!
Marcoblanco
Off to Bracknell tomorrow to see what the proper Railway moddelers are getting up to.. oh and I need some of those Dart castings buffers! For a salt wagon.. 5
Marcoblanco
I didn't use another pga in this conversion as recommended by some articles I've seen as felt it was a waste. Just butchered up extended, filled in and rubbed down. Paint, weathering and transfers are good at hiding all the imperfections! An interesting little project for those wanting to add something different to their stock. .. 4
Grizz
Got to finish off these wagons as well. Found them in a cupboard when I was looking for something else, think that I started them in Denmark, then did a bit during Covid lockdown, then put them away and forgot where I put them. Just got no time because work keeps getting in the way. Still got to finish off those JRAs.

I want to see if mine are as good as yours!! Finally got some time to finish off the batch of 10 x JRAs. The colour is final, it is just the Halfrods standard red primer used for sealing up the styrene. They been fitted with Bachmann Y25s but with the axle box covers filed flat on some bogies. Most of the wagons still need to have tie down loops and hooks fitted. I’ve modelled these with the ladders removed as per the prototype in later years. 4
Grizz
Also working on another RILS varient, from the stock pile. This one has TF25s but with smaller wheel sets as per the Bachmann bogie cement tanks. Managed to pick up a pack of 10 on eaby. Still needs the detailing on the ends and sides, but the general work is finished. Also having a go at some specialist load flat wagons. Managed to grab 7 x Heljan wagon chassis’. 2 x rail adventure livery and 5 x Cargowaggon blue livery. Possible uses might be transporting new loco bodies, wrapped in the protective delivery sheets.

Thank you. 😊 Yes I did, using John L Fox’s book ‘Railway Wagon Plans - 1960 to Present’ as my source. I actually batch built the bodies 18 months or so ago. But due to work and other commitments I’ve only just got around to fitting spare ready to run Bachmann Y25 bogies and giving them a coat of primer. They are probs going to end up looking ratty, with loads of hand painted patches all over them. I would like to say how much I admire your work. Superb.

They look like a kit they are that clean! Look forward to seeing them progress! I am looking to obtain some of the S-kits offering and build up a rake. Not tackled kit building wagons yet though but do have a few KEA’s to build first. & my work? Thanks! anything in particular ?
Marcoblanco
Scratchbuild a Polybulk? I'm sure someone has .. I thought it might be fun.. I know Mr Burkin did it but never really showed how he did it. Anybody have a tip how to get the curvature on the body, brass? use a former and glue plasticard to it? Anyone tried it?

Given how much the Hackmann ones go for, it’d be good to see a scratch built or bashed version. Looked at Jouef poly bulk types to see if it was viable. Cost of them makes scratch building a cheaper option. Spose it depends on whether modelling the curved or flat sided version. needs Accurascale to challenge them with one of their masterpieces.

An embarrassing mistake on my part. WCML100 I will definitely check out your work. It took around forty minutes to compose my posts this afternoon, with numerous corrections. And all I can offer in my defence is the following evidence…..it was full to the very top at lunch time; I’ve been the only person home today…. and since then the tide has gone out somewhat. Grizz
More beer assisted mayhem…my attempt at aging DB Red JRAs. It is planned that 7 of the ten will be aged with 3 left in good condition, with very light road dirt. I need various bespoke faded water slide transfers for DB, DB Schenker and DB Cargo. Railtec has some superb faded DB logos, but I’ll need a bunch of wagon codes etc.
