Looking for old AHM bits...

Recommended Posts

I'm on the lookout for the following, which given their level of 'quality' (1970s toy tooling basically!) somebody might have as a collection of bits at the bottom of a scrapbox!?

1. AHM (also sold as Bachmann and possibly others) clamshell roof coil gondola.

2. AHM (also sold as Mehano and possibly others) 50' "modern" stock car

Both for kitbash/detail/repaint projects, so no need for any of them to have couplers, wheels, trucks etc - in fact the coil gondola I only really need the body!

If anyone has something they are willing to part with can you send me a PM. Thanks!

Having looked into coil cars in the past (thing's you do ......) I'm pretty sure that the clamshell cars were modified very quickly to remove the 'rooves' as they got easily damaged and couldn't be opened/closed. The distinctive curved rails on the sides remained, and conventional coil covers were used instead. Evans quickly brought out the revised design as made by Red Caboose in N and HO and thankfully for me K-Line in O. A modernised/modified ex clamshell car would certainly give a bit of variety in coil carrying gondolas, although I'm not sure how long they survived.

There were I think 50 P&LE and 10 BLE originally. P&LE leased theirs from USRE from 1968 to 1989. They were then leased to HS in July 1990, and apparently HS immediately entered them in an assigned service agreement with the Chicago Short Line. I didn't realise they had lasted so long, but then the 90's is too modern for me .....

I once had one of the coil cars and it scrubbed up quite nicely with Roundhouse trucks and Kadees. I think I had to reduce the bolster height and fill in the coil trough with styrene as AHM left a gap in the moulding. Then I discovered the paper industry and passed it on to someone that could make more use of it.
