blueeighties
I would like to purchase a Heljan 7mm 31. It carries the original bodyside beading. As I model British Rail mid eighties, we're there many locos still running around with it during this time period? I will be doing a grotty plain blue example. rob D2
Depends where you define mid 80s. 84-85 still plenty. It appears to be 86 onwards when the grey really starts to dominate. For instance 3/4 of my favourites were in grey by the end if
RMweb Gold Robert Shrives Posted April 3, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 3, 2016 Hi , Yes ! as ever choose number - forget 31/4. The Class 31 photo file by Martin Loader and Rich Norris shows 31s in this guise eg 31167 in 1984 at Ipswich and this has buffer cowls as well 31185 in 1985, 186 in 1986 and even 31198 in 1992- all rail blue. The IBSN for the book is 1-900872-06-4 A great tomb for pics of weathering as well, 144 pages of pedal cars! Robert
blueeighties
Cheers Rob. So do I take it the banding was removed during refurb and subsequent repainting?
Guest B Exam
Cheers Rob. So do I take it the banding was removed during refurb and subsequent repainting?Yes. On 31156 and 31202 they was refurbished but painted BR blue as the Railfreight livery was about to be introduced on the next loco after refurbishment - 31252. The last 31/1 to be refurbished was 31106 and this was painted BR blue as the DM & EE sector had no livery of their own at the time, so Doncaster painted it in a neutral colour. 31198 was Railfreight grey by December 1985. Date error in the 31 Photofile book! Also 31292 was never refurbished but lost some of the beading around one the cab ends after collision damage repairs at Doncaster. 31187 had plated over headcode boxes prior to refurbishment but painted yellow. Lord Flashheart
Hi Lee 31123,31162 and 31289 were all late survivors with the body side banding, all 3 were preserved but 31123 was later scrapped for spares, hope that helps you. Rob
