Thumper destroyed by fire - Swindon & Cricklade

Presumably a group/railway like this would have some sort of insurance? And if they do, would not this pay out?

Maybe, but....

(1) The Swindon & Cricklade are hardly flush with cash so I would imagine that their insurance policies have to be similarly modest in terms of what they cover.

(2) As with motor vehicle insurance, you will be hard pressed to get enough money out of the railways insurers to do anything meaningful with what remains of the trailer - the Mid-Hants didn't get any money to rebuild their LSWR coach that was destroyed when the Roply carriage works went up in flames.

I don't think insurance is either here or there. The loss of a heritage item (be it a railway carriage, an aircraft, whatever) is something that can never be recovered. Even if some kind of rebuilding were possible, it would be fair to say that most of the bodywork of the carriage is unrecoverable and so it will never be the carriage that it was :(

That is good news. DEMUs were cut, shut, mixed and matched all the time, so it really shouldn't be an issue. Hope they can get the 205 trailer.
