RMweb Premium phil-b259 Posted May 25, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 25, 2016 Presumably a group/railway like this would have some sort of insurance? And if they do, would not this pay out? Maybe, but.... (1) The Swindon & Cricklade are hardly flush with cash so I would imagine that their insurance policies have to be similarly modest in terms of what they cover. (2) As with motor vehicle insurance, you will be hard pressed to get enough money out of the railways insurers to do anything meaningful with what remains of the trailer - the Mid-Hants didn't get any money to rebuild their LSWR coach that was destroyed when the Roply carriage works went up in flames. RMweb Premium Ian J. Posted May 25, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 25, 2016 I don't think insurance is either here or there. The loss of a heritage item (be it a railway carriage, an aircraft, whatever) is something that can never be recovered. Even if some kind of rebuilding were possible, it would be fair to say that most of the bodywork of the carriage is unrecoverable and so it will never be the carriage that it was
Harry Lime
Just found this on a local (Swindon) website if anyone is interested: someone has set up a GoFundMe page for the Thumper. Please note that the GoFundMe page expires on 1st July, not as it says in the article 1st May.

Guest
That is good news. DEMUs were cut, shut, mixed and matched all the time, so it really shouldn't be an issue. Hope they can get the 205 trailer.
jetmorgan
Looks like they are going to give it a go at getting it running again...at least the driving car anyway so hope everyone can search their pockets and down the back of the sofa for a few quid to donate http://www.swindon-cricklade-railway.org/future.php#thumper
