Hi, recently bought this, put on prog track, and reads all cvs, but all are 255, CV1 99/20/8/255/128,   ID  99/20/8/255/128.  Am aware that i can change CV8, to 33, to rest, but will that lose sounds/ functions. thanks. john

Too much emphasis on whether you can read back the CVs!!

Does it WORK? /.... test it with a 9V dc battery across the pickup wheels = does it move?

(It may not , if it has been set to disable DC running)

WRITE CV29 = 6  (short address, 28/128 steps, dc enabled)

try loco 3 ... changing cv 29 might have reset the address to 3 but don't rely on it.

WRITE CV1 to value 3 .... use a system which does not require read-back, or disable it in your system

Then try Loco = 3

Your decoder MAY or MAYNOT support resetting on CV8=8  (or CV8= 2 or  ...or ...or )

What make of decoder is it?

What make were you TOLD it was?

Does your programmer work well with sound decoders???

Is there a 'stay alive' capacitor in circuit ???

Help us to help you by giving some useful information

PHIL, thanks, have not tested for DC, but will do.  It is a lenz decoder..  Have 6 Hornby sound locos which work fine with Hornby Railmaster, and / or Elite. This was bought from private advert, which only said DCC, plus sound. No idea of current loco no, no instructions. Hence tried to change/ reset to new number, but dont want to lose sound, which can occur on reset. Am 72, and disabled, one handed typing only. This is first mehano loco.  Actually belived the guy who said it was immaculate. He is right, loco, barely used. He has from  looking externally, fitted decoder and speaker in tender. Difficult to supply much more info. john

Assuming you have opened the loco to see the decoder: First UNPLUG THE ADDON SOUND DECODER - WORK ON ONE PROBLEM AT A TIME

Then test the Lenz -  it is possible that the read-back was being affected / corrupted by the add-on sound decoder - these are best dealt with separately unless the procedure is KNOWN to modify one, without affecting the other accidentally.

If you can identify the decoders, a google search will usually provide a copy of the manual for each of them.

With ONLY the Lenz in circuit: retest to see if you can read the CVs - although I would skip this test,as reading is NOT a requirement for programming !

TEST it ON DC,   - this may have been disabled.    The decoder MIGHT have been left in a 'consist' using the consist address - is this likely ???

Reset it it with CV8 =8  or any other value suggested by Lenz Gold manual - this usually cures most problems

Ty loco 3

Set CV29 to short address as previously suggested - does it accept a new address ?

Once the loco motor is responding (and lights???) - replace the sound decoder - and read about SUSI sound -  you mentioned Mehano as the loco make - it may therefore be a european  make of decoder - their manuals are usually available on line.

Lenz Gold decoders have the SUSI interface, for attaching sound only decoder modules (piggy-back), such as those from Digitrax etc.

Not so much Digitrax decoders (which don't talk Susi), but decoders by Dietz (and anyone else doing the same sort of thing).

It would be possible to have two decoders, a Lenz for motors and another for sound (such as Digitrax).

Uhlenbrok do susi as well but all their web stuff is in german so a tad difficult for me to get the gist of.

It looks like we are all on the same page John with the Lenz having a piggy back sound module.

Some one out their must have this rig and some instructions to go with it.
