Family fun with the LEGO 10254 "Winter Holiday Train" for £69.99.

Modellers could buy two and make it look like the American 4-4-0 it is meant to be instead of the silly 4-2-0 configuration in the set. (With two sets there would enough wheels for a 4-6-0 but you'll need more bricks to do that.)

With extra components it can be configured with LEGO power units to be self-propelled with remote IR control.

Spare wheels are available on Brickowl, but at £10 per axle they must be the most expensive model wheelsets out there...

I've approached this from the perspective of gifts I would have been delighted to have received rather than spending my hard-earned on.

£75 - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Mini-Airbrush-Compressor-Kit-HS-217-Kit-1-/111022380834?hash=item19d9731722:g:AWEAAMXQ8OdRMn0c - the best compressor I've had; reliable, compact, reasonably quiet, controllable, small internal tank for smoothing out pressure and this version comes with an idiotproof airbrush.

£73 - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/311552872717?lpid=122&chn=ps&adgroupid=28306099746&rlsatarget=pla-184487903346&adtype=pla&poi=&googleloc=9046470&device=c&campaignid=628859225&crdt=0 - and then you'll need a reliable and compact spray booth!

https://airbrushes.com/product_info.php?products_id=21235 - any of the Lifecolor weathering packs; great for airbrush and brush use.

http://www.scalemodellingnow.com/hntools-pinnacle-modelling-supplies-weathering-pigments - Pinnacle weathering powders, a useful range of colours and the pot's not likely to get knocked over.

£5 - http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/archimedes-drill-a42uq?cmpid=ppc&gclid=CjwKEAjwj92_BRDQ-NuC98SZkWYSJACWmjhlTmkwWGs8Y0k4ud2m_cAW21wIPv_parBP7sXO8EhZuhoC_Onw_wcB - Archimedes screw drill, very useful for drilling fine holes without wearing out thumb and forefinger.

£80 - http://www.green-scene.co.uk/Flockit.html - Green Scene's Flock-it, reliable and reasonably powered.

If you've bought two sets you'll have more bricks.
