hi Greg,

According to BRDatabase.info (link here) only two locomotives, 525 and 526 were delivered with LNER numbers, these being delivered in late 1947, and the first few days of 1948 respectively.  After that they had the E prefix under British Railways and were released in Brunswick Green.  I would assume from that that, only the first two were in LNER Apple Green with LNER lettering.  The next five E527-E531were delivered mid-January to mid-March 1948 with E prefixes, and all after that were delivered with BR 605xx numbers.

525 was outshopped in LNER apple green, but was repainted in British Railways Brunswick Green during a visit to Doncaster, arriving 13th July 1949, during which time it gained its BR number.  The same happened with 526, which arrived on 13th September 1949.

So in essence only two locos 525 between 12th December 1947 and 13th July 1949, and 526 between 9th January 1948 and 13th September 1949.

Hope that helps

Rich

Thanks both; very helpful indeed!

I've decided to model (in N gauge) the LNER period between the end of WW2 and the first years of Nationalisation (say '45 - '49). It's an interesting period historically both in railway and non railway terms. I'd also figured that a variety of wartime, post war grouping and early BR liveries would have been seen during this time.

I managed to pick up a Dapol wartime black Flying Scotsman at Warley today (pretty sure it was the only one there) and the LNER liveried Farish J39 along with some more Dapol teak coaches I've already accumulated.

I almost purchased the Farish A2 referenced above however the wallet didn't quite allow it today. Having done some basic research on the A3 liveries I believe Scotsman carried wartime black until Jan '47 although I believe some of the class carried it further into '47. I appreciate it's somewhat of a stretch for a wartime black A3 and an A2 to appear together based on the info above (not least a potential A1 in Apple green with 'British Railways' on the tender) but to me it should make an interesting mix and I'm happy to use a little modellers license. It seems during this timeframe almost anything did go livery wise.

Hi Greg,

Well remember Rule #1 - its your railway, so you can run what you want!  If you set the scene in late 1940s, then it would all apply anyway.  Interesting to hear what your doing and thinking - hope your planning a thread on it!  Im currently giving thought to something similar, albeit it in 7mm, but my aim is to create something maybe ECML or as an ECML diversion route, which would allow me to run A2s, A3s and A4s, alongside the 0-6-0s, 2-8-0s and V2s, probably more freight than passenger tho in my case!  Its an interesting period for rolling stock as well, specifically teaks.  The post-war years allow some different liveries, such as wartime black etc... but I'm also thinking that the immediate pre-war years could be interesting, i.e. the mid-late 1930s, as long as its after 1934/35 when the A4s appeared.

Look forward to following your thoughts and what you are thinking.

Just as an addition to that list 60532 and 60533 had the number painted on the bufferbeam, all the locos after that had smokebox numberplates from new
