Dazzler Fan
There is a photograph of 25a shunting (pushing) opens through Radstock Station without a Brake Van. I realize it is only 4 or 5 wagons, but what was the protocol for shunting between Radstock and nearby colliery sidings? Noel
Rivercider
The relevant Sectional Appendix to the Working Time Table and Books of Rules and Regulations will contain details. Table F covers 'Propelling of Trains or Vehicles' and will show what the permitted moves were between two locations, though I do not have a copy that covers the Radstock area. Normally a brake van was required as the leading vehicle for the guard or shunter to ride in, but table F would list exceptions to this. There might be restrictions, for example, on the number or type of vehicles, and it might not be permitted during fog or falling snow. cheers
RailWest
According to the 1933 WTT Appendix, any number of vehicles could be drawn or propelled between the East and West signal-boxes at Radstock without a brake-van.
