rogerzilla
That looks quite realistic, apart from the painted vacuum hose! Smokeboxes have a floor made of concrete, poured in there during heavy overhaul, as it resists the acid char and heat better than the steel underneath. Getting the concrete out again at the nexxt overhaul is back-breaking work.

Thank you rogerzilla - I agree ref the vacuum hose - I found a picture on Flickr of a 3F Jinty and the top of the vacuum hose was a rusty colour with silvery pipes, the base of the pipe painted red to blend in with the buffer beam. Hopefully it will all be toned down once I get around to weathering it with some oily deposits and dirt/smoke residue.
RMweb Gold ianLMS Posted January 24, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 24, 2017 So, here is the 3F about 99% complete. Just waiting for fire irons and lamps to turn up in the post. Any constructive criticism with accompanying advice is always gratefully received. And yes, I spotted the huge, over-scale cobweb and cleaned it off the water crane lol!!! Il Grifone
An excellent result! My memories of engine sheds are of a generally black ground cover from coal dust mixed with oil and grease. Steam locomotives are dirty beasts - one reason/excuse for getting rid of them. Another excuse trotted out was cost - An accountacy exercise by the NYC in 1946 actually debunked this one. Steam worked out cheaper than diesel even in a land of cheap oil.

I will get the black wash out and turn the service area a little more black and hopefully more realistic. I used real ash for the main ground cover, but it looks too light and lumpy now you've mentioned it! Many thanks for the comments. Ian
