AMJ
Yesterday whilst operating the Middleton Railway we were talking and the following question arose. During a normal August Sunday how many steam locomotives are in operation? Many railways have just one locomotive in steam, others are rostered for say four engines. The comment of a Sunday in August is the majority of railways with steam run then. There must be a hundred railways without looking at main line in action each Sunday. bingley hall
I would hazard a guess that on a peak summer weekend, there are more operating steam locomotives in the UK than the rest of the world combined.
Killian keane
Ah well, where is the cut off point between full size and miniature? Are we including miniature? 15", 10 1/4", 7 1/4" and 5"
RMweb Gold The Johnster Posted August 17, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 17, 2017 Even if you restrict it to standard gauge locos, I would think the preservation movement can probably field more steam locos in operation on a bank holiday than BR could at any time in 1968.
