Trouble at Moses Gate station Bolton

APOLLO

Recommended Posts

The last few days Bolton station has been closed to allow significant electrification / track works there.

Just down the line, at Moses Gate station a large diameter water main has burst adjacent to a road overbridge and has caused serious damage. Work is ongoing at the moment but does not look good.

Scroll to photo 8120g & zoon out. Both tracks are misplaced out of line. Has the bridge abutment moved ? (bits of it were blown out by water pressure as in earlier photos).

A massive job if it has moved - not good. This important & busy line won't re-open soon I guess.

Serious I know, but how does water shortage lead to road closure ?    Sloppy reporting ?

I believe an old cast iron water main has fractured, causing a massive leak that has washed away the soil behind the railway bridge abutment / retaining walls and also caused structural damage. The road would be closed due to flooding or as a as a safety precaution.

Some water mains run at high pressure, and high pressure water can be very destructive when a main fractures / fails Not much news on this at the moment. Found this

I think Network Rail will be very concerned about the old stone bridge abutments and retaining walls alongside.
