Cherrham Junction | Modern Image OO Gauge Layout

Cherrham Junction

Recommended Posts

Been browsing through some topics on the forum for a while now and decided its about time to make my own.

The layout is set in the modern era and is based roughly within the southeast (somewhere!). Unfortunately there is a big lack of passenger trains running at the moment as there havent been many Southeastern units made and my scratchbuilding skills are certainly not good enough to make one myself yet.

Ive recently extended the layout so dont have an exact size, but im pretty sure its about 15ft by 12ft running round the edge of the room. Consists of two layers. The bottom  being the fiddle yard and the top layer being the scenic section. Im halfway through wiring all the points on the top section, but cannot for the life of me gain any more motivation to finish them (as you can tell i love electrics), so i decided to make a start on the scenic sections.

The area in the photos was originally a station area but decided to change it to a small TMD area. My plans are to have a refueling point on one side and a loco shed on the other. Hopefully this gives you a rough idea on this area and I will tidy the place up and take some more pictures when I next go out and work on it.

The latest update for the layout can be found on YouTube but a fair bit has changed since this update, but this might give you a better understanding of the track plan, size and scenic plans. https://youtu.be/JKTbro8XWEs

Thanks :D

Nice start!

Are you planning to paint the rails sides before ballasting or weather the competed track in one go with an airbrush?

Thanks.

Ill probably go for just the painting of the rail sides to begin with. The main tracks have each had a coat on them, but im yet to do the TMD area as i want a different weathered effect on there. So ill probably use the air brush for that part. I can always come back to mainlines at a later date.

The layout looks fantastic, I've been following your youtube channel for a while now and have always wondered if you had created a thread on rmweb and here it is. I also model modern image but mostly southern based rolling stock. Looking good and keep it up, Rory.

More work has been done on the TMD area. It is now pretty much all gravelled and the rails have been weather. I've used filler to do the concrete area by the loco shed, so I still need to add some finishing touches to it and I'm not entirely sure I like the colour of it at the moment.

In the fuelling point the security fencing has been fully added and a path has been added from the fuelling point across the track. The small hole by the path is for the yard lights. I've got 2 of these at the moment but will probably add more at a later date.

On the top scenic board, work has started on the industrial estate. The kerb stones and building materials are all from Scale Model Scenery and the industrial buildings are a Wills Modern Kit. I'm unsure at the moment how to do the paths. Think ill just use plasticard and then paint it, but that will be the next step. Once thats done ill finish the road markings and then add any greenery.

The latest running session has just been uploaded to the channel: https://youtu.be/-lia9_3kkXw

Thanks for looking

Jamie

Apologies for lack of posts over the last month, been busy with work commitments. Anyway here are the latest updates for the layout.

-TMD area is nearing completion. All track work has been weathered and gravelled and work on the concrete area around the engine shed is almost complete. I decided to carry on the concrete base all the way across to the edge of the baseboard and has been coated in Woodland scenics concrete colour. Once ive got the finish I'm happy with ill weather it up and start running trains into there.

- Over on the industrial estate side, the fuelling point has been completed and the Berko yard light has been installed and wired up (Pic 4). Need to get a couple more of these to light up the rest of the TMD, but that can come at the end.

-On the estate itself its now overrun with trees and other greenery. Its amazing how adding some trees and bushes brings the scene to life.

66779 has also been added to the fleet along with some coaches for railtours. Bit disappointed Bachmann didnt include the bell as part of the accessory pack, especially with the price you pay for the locos nowadays. Even the one you could buy for £10 was out of scale and didnt look great, but there we go!

More in depth detail can be found in the latest layout update.

Hi all,

Slow progress as always but we're getting there eventually!

-The yard is now full operational as I've installed all the dropper wires to the necessary sidings. Probably something I should have done first but doing the electrics is probably the most tedious part for me!

-Smaller details have been added to the yard as well. Security fencing is about halfway along now. This was from scale model scenery but instead of using their material for the fence itself I had this metal mesh which i cut to size as used as the chain link. Ive also added small crash barriers, a couple of vans and painted the concrete area with two coats of woodland scenic concrete top coat. Now I need to decide about detailing within the depot!

- Further up the layout Ive built another road bridge and then started adding the scenery to the area where the top level goes down to the bottom level. This area will be more of a countryside area but Im still work on what I'm actually going to put here.

Also added a few new additions to the fleet. A Dapol class 73 in GBRf livery; a Bachmann colas rail 47727 & Bachmann GBRf 66789 in BR livery.

Thanks for taking the time to read as always :)

Hi all,

Detailing has been added to engine shed and is finally starting to look how i want it to. Bit of weathering on the concrete and that should be the TMD area all finished. Also started work the other side of the road bridge add some walling and greenery to the area where the incline meets the main running lines. Had an old Bachmann scenecraft sub station so add that to the lineside area and will add and mobile phone mast or some pylons to the bare baseboard.

New addition to the fleet are the Hattons Beilhack snowploughs.  I'm sure theres some small details others will pick out, but Impressed with these. Well weighted and the detail is really good on them. If this is the standard hattons are going to model to on their products then the RHTT and the new class 66's should be good!

Been doing some work the ballast sidings ive added behind the station area. Just been adding some foliage to separate the main running lines with the sidings. Ive also used two types of ballast for the mainline and the sidings. This was purely down to me having some old gaugemaster ballast that needed using up before I started using the woodland scenics blend. The platforms themselves are slowly getting there. Ive been messing around with some different shades of grey and blacks to give the effect of patchy tarmac. Its just a trial run and needs touching up in various places but im happy enough with it for now.

Also got hold of some of Revolution Trains TEA tank wagons. Just got them in the grey livery to represent the aviation fuel runs that have been running between Grain and Colnbrook. Very nice wagons, with good detail and run really well.

Next thing on the list is to work on the scenic break at the back of the ballast sidings and then start to design the town scene and the other end of the station.

Cheers

Jamie

Not a lot of progress this month, apart from starting the scenic area to the right of the station. Decided to just make the raised scenic part out of cardboard as it was easier than cutting mdf into the shape i wanted. The bridge over the ballast sidings on the left was purchased off of ebay and the one of the right was made from Merkur polystyrene brickwork and a peco bridge girder. The filler is where the main road will cut across the foreground of the scene and then a small dirt track will branch off up towards the house etc...IMG_4288.JPG.20a6654443bb42058883c9943df3f721.JPG
