RMweb Premium Kris Posted April 11, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 11, 2018 Check to make sure that none of the valve gear is rubbing or binding against the body or other bits of valve gear.

34theletterbetweenB&D
One clue to likely cause is that if the loco operated quietly and smoothly at some time in the past and has been operated regularly since, did the change to current grinding and jerky running happen suddenly. or build up gradually over time? 'Suddenly' is often an indicator of a discrete mechanical change (such as the side rods catching possibly because one has been slightly bent by handling). 'Gradually' is usually an indicator of deterioration ( such as lubricant dried out or lost, build up of wear to a mechanism part). Alternatively, if the loco has been in store out of use for some time, most likely dried out or lost lubrication.
