RMweb Gold ikks Posted May 11, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 11, 2018 (edited) I visited Crewe Works in late 1961, electric locos were being constructed there, it was a long time ago and my memory is not what it was so could anyone tell me what class they would be??...........AL1 seems to ring a bell? Incidentally Duchess of Montrose was being overhauled there in a sickly undercoat of LNER green..........Sir Bill would have turned ...........She was withdrawn just over a year later Mike Edited May 11, 2018 by ikks
RMweb Gold stovepipe Posted May 11, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 11, 2018 Don't think any of the AL1-4 types were built at Crewe, and the AL5s were built at Doncaster. Perhaps they were there for rectification? The 87s were built at Crewe but 10 + years later.
10000
Have to say I don't recall seeing 25kv locos being built there around that time. AL1 Introduced 1959 AL2 1960 AL3 1960/61/62 AL4 1960 AL5 1960/62 Edit: could they have been Classes 72/73 which were introduced 1962 and I seem to remember something like them being built at Crewe Edited May 11, 2018 by 10000
RMweb Gold stovepipe Posted May 11, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 11, 2018 The electro diesels class 73 were built at Vulcan Foundary, up the road at Newton-le-willows. Perhaps they were export locos?
RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted May 11, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 11, 2018 More likely to have been overhaul or modification work. Build details were Class 81 AEI(BTH)/BRCW Class 82 AEI(MV)/Beyer Peacock Class 83 English Electric Vulcan Foundary Class 84 GEC/NBL Class 85 AEI/BR Doncaster. Source:- The AC Locomotive Group. Definitely not export loco's. Could have been a few years later, the 74's. Just checked one of my old books and for me to have all of the 74's in the same colour ink it would have to be Crewe or Derby as I didn't get down to the Southern area very much. RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted May 12, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 12, 2018 Mainline locos built at Crewe after they finished steam were Class 24, Peaks, Westerns and Class 47 in that order. New build deliveries in 1961 was all Peaks IIRC.

So Mike maybe a few years out and its was the 74's I was working at Crewe when the 71s were being rebuilt into 74s. Late 1967 / early 1968. For a short while I was in the Signal Shop next to Goddard St. New locos on test were parked outside our window including the last five Class 20s and about the first 12 Class 50s.
