Owd Bob
I just attended this local gathering which was held to raise funds to repair the crumbling pit head gear the last one that is still standing in the Lancashire area and thought i would share the pics' Has anyone got half a million going spare? Its hoped all the monies raised this weekend will help to get more funding to come forward. There's a lot of interesting railway related items which are preserved or under preservation, and the two foot gauge visitors railway is coming on a treat. I'll post more pics later. RMweb Premium Dava Posted May 20, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 20, 2018 Interesting photos & wishing the project well. Coal mining museums tend to find the going hard but it's worthwhile, as you say nothing else survives in the Northwest.
37038
Just got back myself - a massive change from the last time I went (about 5yrs ago). The place has huge potential but, looking at the state of the head gear, I hope they get the funding required soon.
Owd Bob
Shame to say but the old guys are popping off and no one wants to take their places these days, there's a lot of stuff there on site, but far too much for the small amount of volunteers to look after at the moment. I do hope this event brought out more folks to think about volunteering and helping out at the site. The head gear is an iconic structure and can be seen for miles around, the winding engine is one of the biggest ever built. I have an interest in the site as both my Grandfather and Gt. Grandfather and other family members worked at this pit in the last century. I do hope the weekend was a great success. Some last pics' here, sorry if some are repeated but my computer seems to want to post some twice and others not at all!
APOLLO
Good to see Fred Dibnah's Land Rovers are in still around & in good nick Bob. I was (still am) a fan of Fred, his early programmes were superb, but his later ones were not quite as interesting (Producers fault - not Fred's). Were any of his steam traction engines there ? Iv'e never been to Astley - well I did back in the late 60's when the NCB steam was running - a long way home to & from Wigan on a wonky old bike !! I must try to visit again sometime - not by bike though !! Brit15.

His old Landies are always out and about around the local classic shows, one is owned by his youngest Daughter and her Hubby. They'll be at the Heskin Steam rally nr' Chorley in early June on the Series two club stand area. Edited May 21, 2018 by Owd Bob
Owd Bob
Just a few interesting things about this pit site, the early 1980's Edwardian era TV comedy series 'Brass' starring Timothy West as the dastardly Bradley Hardachre was filmed here, some scenes and the opening credits also show the nearby Plank Ln. Bickershaw Colliery at Leigh, and 'Peaky Blinders' a newish TV show i've been told, is also filmed here.
Owd Bob
I had a great evening and another interesting visit to the mining museum when my other half got invited to a guided tour of the site with the charity group she is involved in. Thought i would share a few pics' that might be useful and interesting modeling wise. The winding engine is said to be one of the biggest in Europe. Some old signage be careful how you read a couple of these! The oldest engine in the collection. There must over two dozen locos' scattered around the site. Will post more pics' later.....the Dentist beckons!
Owd Bob
Loads of old wagons and track stored around the site, i especially like the spoked wheels and wonder what they came from? More pics' later.
