A friend recommended this site and I have found both interesting and useful.
It covers all railway routes both standard and narrow gauge in the UK and Ireland. It also covers canals as well on separate pages. Well worth a look.

As a sort of bonus it covers railroads on the west coast of the USA too.

Thanks for sharing what I can see could be a very absorbing website … more hours on the www!

 

The "Railway Features" layer and the ability to highlight currently existing routes against historic ones are particularly interesting.

It shows industrial railways as well, though in many cases it fails to differentiate between that and the adjacent main line company.
