Why would you think that?

I don’t know.... that why I’m asking the question but the sidings at Midford are shunted in the Evercreech to Bath direction aren’t they?

 

Edit..... just looked at a map and I see they’re not..... forgive me. I obviously need to buy more S&D books ;)

The Up siding at Midford seems to have been rarely used. As the connection to the Down sidings (goods yard) was facing to Up trains, in the years after the removal of the crossover road on the viaduct (circa-1918), then the shunting 'must' have been done by down trains - the rising gradient towards Bath prevented fly shunting.
