Even Switzerland is seeing a decline in wagonload traffic with the number of active terminals served by SBB being regularly reduced to save costs and the remaining network is (I believe) in receipt of a government subsidy. Unfortunately wagonload traffic is expensive to operate and really needs at least one end of the flow to be directly rail connected. Other than perhaps a niche operation as seems to be conducted by the private freight companies in Belgium and France, which are more akin to the old Transrail Enterprise Network with small blocks of wagons combined for the trunk movement, this type of freight is unlikly to be seen again in the UK.
