pre-grouping and never-grouped narrow gauge

Oh, the trees are from post Christmas sales in garden centres. Some are as much as 18” tall and are essentially fake full used plants. But then that feels in keeping with the garden railway vibe. Rule 1 applies, too :D

New backscene: 10m of sky blue poly cotton for £20. Should be enough to do the full layout, with spare. Then old curtains below. Might even warm the place up a bit!

it isn’t perfect, but it’s so much lighter, and doesn’t detract from the increasingly busy foreground. From my scenery painting days, I used to think of the audience was commenting on the scenery it wasn’t doing it’s job- or the actors weren’t!

Huzza!

A fort you say?

funny you should say that, they are exactly the gentlemen due to be billeted in Fort Charles.. with a noonday gun on the larger tower. I’m taking my anachronistic little island to new levels.

I’m thinking of adding a bandstand with fireman on it too…

I’ve a horse drawn waggon kit on the way to finally give my travelling preacher somewhere to preach from. That’s a bit more real life, but again not necessarily right for a specific period

I’ve been putting this off for ages because, well, it’s slow and repetitive and I need to be in that frame of mind. A length of stone wall for the platform; eventually most will disappear under enamel signs and plants, but wow this is testing me. We may have lineside fencing not walls, and I’m certainly considering rendered walls on the castle! About 18” more to go!

On one 0 scale diorama layout I built a retaining wall for a NG-SG tipping dock from actual stone.

I found some very friable stuff bedded in very thin layers in an abandoned lime pit on a dog walk, got a few “sheets” 2-3mm thick and about a foot square, and broke them down into “stones” which I then laid properly using tile cement as mortar. When each section was nearly dry I gently rubbed the face with a damp toothbrush, which seemed to really bed everything together.

The end result was flipping good, if I do say so myself, but it wasn’t exactly a quick thing to build!

I’ve seen people do that with slate. One day, maybe, but a) patience and maybe sanity and b) everything else in the model is painted card, so I’m trying to keep a continuity in styles, especially in particular buildings- it needs to be painted to match the stone station building.

but yes, one day :)

oh and Nearholmer, I really salute you for doing so!

I’m an attempt to avoid the bl**dy wall.. we now have a harbour, or some of it.

About 6ft long and 1ft tall, it is going to take some work, but looks solid enough. The tide will be out, with a couple of little fishing boats at funny angles and rock pools at the cliff end of the bay. Much easier than trying to make waves look right. Will be removable for woodworking.

wondering how to make 16mm scale crabs and crab pots. Make your own jokes up :D

Starting on some Whitby style cliffs for one end of the harbour. I loathe polystyrene, but there we go. lighthouse sort of works, certainly adequately for me. I also have some lovely essential oils that smell like the seaside, seaside sound effects and, of course Ronnie and Reggie seagull.

Maybe I need a chip wagon somewhere..

And two seagulls? I get more than that in our garden and we’re miles from the sea…

Ah, but what seagulls! I love the fact they're called Ronnie and Reggie, though that suggests Crayfish to me.

Will you have a hedgehog called Spiney Norman?
