(G)WR Van Definitions?

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks,

Can anyone explain the definitions of the following terms used in (G)WR working documents such as Local Parcels Train Formations and Passenger Train Working books for stations:-

1) Small Van

2) Van

3) Large Van

4) Van (8 wheel)

5) Gas Heated Brake (e.g.: Van No. 57 or 305)

6) Brake Van (I assume this is a BG (GWR or BR)?

7) Parcel Van

Non of these are Syphon G or GUV, because these terms (which I understand) are also used in the same documents.

Stay safe, enjoy your modelling,

Best regards

Paul

I know it's not your period, but you might find this video from Pendon interesting:

It describes the vehicles making up their version of the 1930s Fishguard to Paddington parcels.

Compare that with the relevant entry in the through trains programme.......

and, if Pendon have put together a reasonably accurate formation, it demonstrates how difficult the printed document is to translate to actual vehicles. (Never mind the alternatives of MX, MO, TO, TX, etc).

When I posed a similar question, as yours, to Bill Beckett (Xpress Publishing) a few years back, his answer was along the lines of a 'Van' can be anything from a vanfit up to a Siphon G, BG, GUV, etc, unless otherwise specified - i.e. whatever the traffic department can find at the time!
