mavsk
I haven't posted on here in a very long time so I though it was time to share something! About 20 years ago, I made a model of the platform shelter at Doleham out of card for my Dad's railway in the shed. I then started to make a pair in plasticard but never got round to finishing it. All cut by hand - I hadn't heard of microstrip at this point unfortunately! So, we visited last Christmas to get some fresh photos - it's a very small station so hard to get photos. It's changed colour scheme in the intervening 20 years: I decided this was a good opportunity to try out the Silhouette Portrait cutter I've had for a little while but hadn't had a chance to use properly. It was all drawn up on Inkscape and then cut from 10 thou plasticard (I think - could have been 15 thou). The cutter varied a bit - some times it cut through cleanly, sometimes it needed helping with a knife. Not sure why - think it may just have been slight varieties in the plasticard. Walls were made of three layers laminated together, the weather boarding was single layer. The floor is Wills wooden planking plastic sheet. I also cut the bench and supports - this was definitely a fiddly job fitting them! In retrospect, I should have left them out until I'd painted the interior though. Inside was painted next, along with a first coat on most of the outside. I primed the plastic first with Halfords white primer - if I did it again I'd probably try a grey primer as light does shine through a bit. Paints were all Humbrol acrylic apart from the light blue which was a Revell paint as I couldn't find the right colour from Humbrol. Once the inside was painted, the roof beams went on. Finally the roof was cut from Wills clear corrugated asbestos sheet - I chose this as it's corrugated on both sides and you can see the underneath. Drainpipes were also from Wills. I also fitted a white LED into each shelter. Final coats of paint and some satin varnish later: Pretty happy with them - took me about five months to get round to finishing them - could have done it a lot, lot quicker! Next project is two SR-style concrete platforms - final test version below: These are cut in 20 thou plasticard with the uprights being three layers and the platform surfaces two layers. There are small locating notches cut into the lower layer to help keep it straight. The top of the posts will have a handrail made up of brass wire. Just need time now to cut something like 250 layers for the uprights! Edited June 5, 2020 by mavsk
