The transition from 1950s Anbrico to 2020s Golden Age Models is similar to the migration of other luxury goods in that time frame. In the 1950s, austerity was all around and the well-to-do had the means to pay for quality and luxury. But nowadays we live in a consumer society - most basic/cheap stuff works perfectly well, so the 'luxury' sector has to move much more in to the notion of 'exclusivity' - products for those that will buy something limited in production and extremely expensive just because they can. In the 1950s, a Rolls-Royce was a 'superior' motor car, but these days any luxury marque will provide more refinement and features than a 1950s Rolls ever would. So the modern Rolls-Royce is now sold at eye-watering prices on an exclusive basis to the super rich, simply because to one one says that you have so much money a mere luxury car is not good enough you. There's an entirely seperate argument about whether it shows good taste.....
