Bachmann 08 motor - reluctant starter

Hello hive mind.

I've looked and not found, so far, the clues I was hoping to find.

I expect that there are heaps of experience of this type of issue.

I've acquired a used Bachmann 08

When it runs, it runs, fast, slow . .

Sometimes, only sometimes, when stopped, it won't go. Likewise at a crawl it will stop dead. It's as if power to the motor has cut out, no motor hum.

Most times a tap or a gentle push will get it going.

Of major concern, sometimes that doesn't work, no amount of power, tapping, prodding help, but with the body off, a gentle push on the motor worm gear or the fly wheel and off it goes.

Not, obviously, a very practical situation.

Is this a replacement motor job or is there something else I should be checking?

I'm pretty new to this hobby, so please excuse my potential ignorance here.

Thanks

Sorted!

Should anyone be interested.

I decide to pop the motor out to separate the possibility that the issue was somewhere in the drive chain or power supply. Indeed the motor stall stalled at low revs and wouldn't spin again without intervention.

A few drops of lubricant inside and out to the drive shaft and the motor is now running smoothly without stalling.
