Southern Region "deep well" cable laying wagon

Hello,

 

Can anyone point me to a photo of a wagon that I wish to reproduce in coarse-0 scale?

 

When I worked with BR(S) Power Supply Section in the late-1970s and early-1980s, our wagon fleet, based at Horsham, included one "deep well" cable layer, designed to accept 3m/10ft diameter drums of 33kV cable. It was based on a weltrol/flatrol, and I have a dim recollection that it had three spindles, the centre one for the big drum, plus one either side for small drums, but it may have had only one.

 

I thought there was a photo in Paul Bartlett's collection, but if there is, I can't find it, only photos of our other Parrot-based, wagons.

 

Any pointers gratefully received.

I have a SR CCE wagon guide from 1983 that lists wagon numbers of the SR CCE fleet specialist vehicles.

No yard/depot allocations are shown, but it does show the height from rail, a number of flatrol vehicles are shown as 1'4 5/8" above rail, types EAB and EAC (TOPS ZVW and ZVR)

others are shown as 1'5" and over above rail height

Is one of these two wagons the one you are thinking of? First is ex Weltrol MC YVP ADB900804, second is ex? YNP ADB976016.

It was the first one I had in memory - I don’t remember the second one.

 

A guy in Aus has made a small series of replicas of the Bassett Lowke weltrol from the 1930s, with a big ‘Callenders’ 33kV drum, all in lovely printed tin, and the plan is to build a ‘drop on’ representation of the deck, drum jacks etc.

I'm wondering about your need for the wagon - is your coarse scale layout a 3-rail one that you are rewiring as a 2-rail system?

Nothing ever needs re-wiring as 2-rail; not ever!

 

Strangely, I wish to create a model of a wagon upon which I spent many a bone-chillingly cold night in the middle of the countryside in my earlier years. Nostalgia does funny things to people.
