John,

,

1923 was bought from the GWR in September, 1939, by Ocean & United Collieries and used at Treorchy, serving both the Parc and Dare Collieries.

.

It passed to the NCB on nationalisation

.

It later worked at Newlands Colliery, and moved to the Maesteg system in 1950/1951.

.

1923 moved again, to Penllwyngwent, Ogmore Vale during the latter half of 1954.

.

She was scrapped at Penllwyngwent circa 1959/1960.

.

Hope this helps ?

.

Brian

It does, Brian; I owe you a pint when I see you!  The Hodges/Davies picture suggests that she was, I quote, ‘standing in’ for Antonia, but from your information she was clearly a resident at Penllwyngwent, and not a hire or drafted in NCB spare.  ‘Standing in’ may infer that she was the spare; she was a good bit older than Antonia.  The photo shows that she’d had a few knocks and it had been a long time since anyone had cleaned her, but she’s in steam and shows no signs of leakage or anything that might suggest a poor mechanical condition.   I wonder if anyone at Penllwyngwent even knew that there was brass to be polished up on the splasher beading and spectacle glass frames, or copper on the chimney!
