Blackthorn
I'm curious to know what the colours of breakdown trains would have been the 1950's. I've seen everything to green, black and red. I'm pretty sure red was '60's and '70's BR days I've bought a cheap Hornby hand crane and clerestory coach and would like to make up up a cheap, if not accurate but, slightly convincing set. Thanks. MJ. (Another of my many projects on the go!!!)
Poor Old Bruce
the cranes would have been lined black like mixed traffic locos and the coaches and/or vans probably plain black with any markings in yellow 1

I thought black would have been right, but I find it hard to tell in black and white photo's. I've found a couple of YouTube video's, but nothing colour (yet!). MJ. (Another of my many projects on the go!!!) Correct, it was the painting instructions of June 1959 which introduced enamel red for the cranes and all associated rolling stock. There is some discussion of liveries in the two volume book on cranes by Peter Tatlow. But for more detail see the three part series by him in the HMRS Journal Volume 21 Part 1 - Black era pages 131 - 134 in Journal part 5 Part 2 - Red era pages 174 - 180 in Journal part 6 Part 3 - Yellow era pages 210 - 214 in Journal part 7 Paul
RMweb Gold phil_sutters Posted December 14, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 14, 2021 These photos were taken at the NRM in 1989. I have no idea what era the livery represents - but it is lined black.
