Tom Burnham
I had always visualised H G Lewin, author of "Early British Railways", "The Railway Mania and its Aftermath" and other pioneering works on early c19 railway history as a rather dry academic. However, I see that after Clifton College and Trinity Coll, Cambridge, he joined the North Eastern Railway, and after postings in Newcastle, Middlesbrough, Sunderland and York ended up as Mineral Train Superintendent at Gascoigne Wood. He was also a keen amateur cricketer. His diaries from 1903 until his death in 1937 are in the East Sussex Record Office (except 1914 which is in the Surrey archives for some reason). I wonder what light they might throw on the Edwardian NER? 4
