The PDC's 'World Series of Darts' events starts today (12th January) with the Bahrain Darts Masters and concludes tomorrow. Coverage is on ITV4. This tournament features 8 of the top names in the PDC against 2 local qualifiers and 6 Asian representatives (including the legendary Paul Lim).

There is another 'World Series' event next weekend (20th & 21st January), the Nordic Darts Masters, in Copenhagen. The next 'Major' is the Masters from Milton Keynes on 27th-29th January. Coverage of both tournaments are on ITV4.

The Premier League begins on 2nd February in Belfast and will run every Thursday night (visiting Cardiff, Glasgow, Dublin, Exeter, Liverpool, Nottingham, Newcastle, Berlin, Birmingham, Brighton, Rotterdam, Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield, and Aberdeen) until the Play-Off Night on 25th May at the O2 Arena in London. Coverage on Sky Sports.

The 'other' World Darts Championship at Lakeside, which traditionally takes places at this time of year, has been moved to the beginning of December, so it would not clash with the PDC's Qualifying School (happening right now) and for it to be the end of season event for the World Darts Federation.

To catch up on the 'World Series' events, the Bahrain Darts Masters was won by new-crowned World Champion Michael Smith, while the Nordic Darts Masters was won by Peter Wright. The next tournament on TV is the Masters on 27th-29th January. Joe Cullen is the defending champion of this event. Those ranked between 9th and 24th enter at the first round and the winners face the top 8 in the second round.

The draw looks like this:

(1) Michael Smith Vs (16) Damon Heta/(17) Ross Smith
(8) Danny Noppert Vs (9) Nathan Aspinall/(24) Stephen Bunting
(4) Gerwyn Price Vs (13) Dirk van Duijvenbode/(20) Krzysztof Ratajski
(5) Luke Humphries Vs (12) Joe Cullen/(21) Chris Dobey
(2) Peter Wright Vs (15) Ryan Searle/(18) Dave Chisnall
(7) Jonny Clayton Vs (10) James Wade/(23) Callan Rydz
(3) Michael van Gerwen Vs (14) Jose de Sousa/(19) Gabriel Clemens
(6) Rob Cross Vs (11) Dimitri Van den Bergh/(22) Gary Anderson

We have a new 'Major' winner in Chris Dobey, who defeated Rob Cross 11-7 to win the Masters.

The eight-player field for the Premier League has been confirmed: Michael Smith, Peter Wright, Michael van Gerwen, Gerwyn Price, Jonny Clayton, Nathan Aspinall, Dimitri van den Bergh, and Chris Dobey.

The format is the same as last year, with each evening being a straight knock-out mini-tournament between the eight players, with all matches being the best of 11/first to 6 legs. I personally dislike it. I much prefer the 10 player format, whereby everyone plays each other once (over the best of 14 legs) in the first nine weeks, with the bottom two players in the league being eliminated after Week 9. After that, the remaining eight players playing each other once more before Play-Off Night, which the top four players in the league progress to (in a 1st or 4th Vs 2nd or 3rd scenario).

I saw some of the final. Rob Cross seemed to struggle with his doubles. I know the feeling. After seeing his earlier results, maybe he just ran out of ... whatever.

You could argue that 'he peaked too soon' but flagging in the final is surely better than having a poor semi & not getting there at all.

The UK Open is on this weekend at Butlins in Minehead, with the tournament is being broadcast on ITV4. The 'FA Cup of Darts' will feature 158 players competing for a share of the £600,000 prize fund with £110,000 going to the winner. World No. 8 Danny Noppert is the defending champion. Other former winners of this event to look out for in the draw are Peter Wright, Michael van Gerwen, James Wade, Nathan Aspinall, Gary Anderson, and Raymond van Barneveld.

All but two of the 128 PDC Tour Card Holders (TCHs) will be joined by 16 qualifiers from the PDC's Development and Challenge Tours, and 16 'Amateur' Qualifiers from Rileys. These Qualifiers will enter at the first round with the TCHs ranked 97-126, then those TCHs ranked 65-96 will enter at the second round, TCHs ranked 33-64 enter at the third round, and then the top 32 enter at the fourth round. Coverage starts late in the morning on Friday 3rd March.

We have a new Major winner in the unassuming Suffolk native Andrew Gilding, who beat World No. 3 Michael van Gerwen 11-10 to win the UK Open. Gilding as a result shoots up the rankings from 41st to 25th and punches his ticket for the Grand Slam of Darts in November.

Gilding at 52 years old is also the oldest first-time Major finalist, and subsequently winner, in darts.

Apart for the ongoing Premier League (of which van Gerwen tops the table), the next tournaments on TV are the US Darts Masters on 2nd-3rd June (on ITV4) and the World Cup of Darts on 15th-18th June (on Sky Sports). The next ranked TV Major is the World Matchplay on 15th-23rd July. In the meantime, there are still the European Tour, Players Championship, Challenge, Development, and Women's Series events that determine qualification for the Majors (i.e. World Matchplay, World Grand Prix, European Championship, Grand Slam of Darts, Players Championship Finals and the World Championship).

12 hours ago, Pete the Elaner said:

The champions don't get seeded? That's unusual.

It is based on the lowest combined ranking of the top two players from each nation, and many of them don't have one, let alone two, players active on the PDC Pro Tour. For example, Smith and Cross, representing England are 1st and 5th respectively in the PDC Order of Merit, while the Australian pair, Heta and Whitlock, are ranked 15th and 40th respectively.

Starting tomorrow (Thursday 26th) is the European Championship from Dortmund. UK coverage is on ITV4. The tournament consists of the top 32 players from the European Tour Order of Merit (i.e. prize money won across the 13 European Tour events this year), hence why the Dave Chisnall (who is 12th in the main Order of Merit) is the top seed for this tournament, while World No. 1 Michael Smith is seeded 8th. Ross Smith is the defending champion of this event.

The draw bracket looks like this:

(16) Martin Schindler (GER) Vs (17) Stephen Bunting (ENG)
(8) Michael Smith (ENG) Vs (25) Raymond van Barneveld (NED)

The European Championship was won by Peter Wright, won beat James Wade 11 legs to 6. The tournament's top seed, Dave Chisnall, and the defending champion, Ross Smith, were both eliminated in the first round. 21-year-old Dutchman Gian van Veen made an impressive debut reaching the semi-finals before losing out to Wade.

The next major is the Grand Slam of Darts starting on Saturday 11th November and concluding on Sunday 19th November at Aldersley Leisure Village in Wolverhampton (UK coverage on Sky Sports). The 32-player field will be confirmed following the final two Players Championship events of the year and the Tour Card Holder Qualifier taking place 'behind-closed-doors' at Barnsley.

The draw for the Grand Slam of Darts has been made. The 32 player field features winners and runner-ups from the PDC's major tournaments from the past 12 months, plus winners from the European Tour and Players Championship events, the Order of Merit leaders from the PDC's secondary tours, a couple of international qualifiers, and 8 Tour Holders who came through the last qualifier.

The tournament features a group stage format, where everyone plays the other three players in their group once, and the top two from each group proceed to the last 16 where the tournament becomes a straight knock out. Michael Smith is the defending champion of this event. With how the draw bracket works out, two players who qualify from the same group can potentially meet in the quarter finals, which I don't think is right. The tournament starts on Saturday 11th.

The group draw bracket looks like this:

Group A
(1) Michael Smith (ENG)
James Wade (ENG)
Krzysztof Ratajski (POL)
Nathan Girvan (SCO)

Group B
(8) Jonny Clayton (WAL)
Chris Dobey (ENG)
Josh Rock (NIR)

The Grand Slam of Darts was won by Luke Humphries, who beat Rob Cross 16 legs to 8, to clinch his second TV Major not long after winning the World Grand Prix in October.

The next tournament is the Players Championship Finals at Butlin's in Minehead on 24th-26th November, with coverage on ITV4. The 64-player tournament will feature two boards in action in the early stages, and it is the last event before the World Championship, meaning that this event can determine the final seedings for the World Championship and who will have to go through the 'last gasp' Tour Card Holder Qualifier on Monday 27th November, with the draw for the World Championship being held that evening, live on Sky Sports News (in-between the never-ending, meaningless chit-chat about football).

Qualification for the Players Championship Finals is made-up from the Top 64 players from the Players Championship Order of Merit, which comprises of prize money won in just the 30 one-day behind-closed-doors events (known as Players Championships) held throughout the year. This why big names such as World No. 2 and European Champion Peter Wright, and World No. 6 and World Matchplay Champion Nathan Aspinall have not qualified (not everyone towards the top of the main Order of Merit does all the events). World No. 7 Danny Noppert, who would have been seeded 9th in this tournament, has withdrawn due to the imminent arrival of his second child. His spot in the draw has been taken by the 65th ranked player in the Players Championship Order of Merit, Dylan Slevin. Before the tournament's final, there will be the World Youth Championship Final, to be contested by Dutchman Gian van Veen and Englishman Luke Littler.

The draw bracket look like this:

(1) Gerwyn Price (WAL) Vs (64) Ricky Evans (ENG)
(32) Kim Huybrechts (BEL) Vs (33) Martin Schindler (GER)
(16) Stephen Bunting (ENG) Vs (49) Mickey Mansell (NIR)
(17) Gian van Veen (NED) Vs (48) Chris Landman (NED)
(8) Ross Smith (ENG) Vs (57) Scott Williams (ENG)
