RMweb Gold Graham T Posted February 14, 2023 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 14, 2023 I'd go for the 1:35 if you can make it work.

Me too, I would go for the shallowest gradient I can accommodate. Only tighten the gradient if you don't have the room not to. I think that I would risk 1:30 as a maximum ideal but we don't always have the luxury do we?
SteamingWales
A little more work on the coal stage ramp to start today. The start of the ramp proper has been made using foamcore I've also built the support brick support for the embankment based upon various photos. Capping stones are still required but that is a job for another day I've maybe stupidly decided to start hacking into the baseboard to get the first pit installed which is on the "washout road". I will wait to add the pit to the "shed road" once I have 100% confirmed the track formation so the shed entrance, smoke troughs etc all line up properly. Although not secured to the board or track glued it does look good 😍
SteamingWales
Work on the layout has been a bit all over the place currently. This is mainly down to the baseboards being incomplete so that I cannot majorly progress with track laying and some building elements requiring extra material. So I thought I would pick up on the stores building to paint the roof and add the gutters and doors ModelU gutters added to the building ☝️☝️ and 3D printed doors recieving a coat of paint 👇👇 One other job has been renumbering and re-cresting the two 4MTs that have been kicking about in the earlier layout photos. The tenders are complete and I am awaiting delivery of numbers from Railtec
SteamingWales
I had intended on doing some modelling this evening, though I came back to find the "Peto's Register" for Manors had arrived Think I will be nose deep in the book all night instead
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted March 3, 2023 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 3, 2023 Fortunately Accurascale's designer who worked on the 'Manor' got a copy of it a long while back! (which is more than I have ... alas) BTW the cover photo is fascinating showing 7810 on a Class A train passing Twyford East Signal Box on the Up Main so presumably it was either still at Banbur or maybe was one of the class that went to Reading for a short while. The book will no doubt tell all. 3
SteamingWales
Hopefully everyone is staying warm with the cold weather. It has been rather snowy in Ilkley and forecast to be -7 over night 🥶 On the layout I've done a little more on the Stores. Having looked at the previous photo above the gap between the gutters and walls doesn't quite look right with the light shining through. To that effect I have added soffits to the building to fill in the gaps. Although you can't really see them it fixes the lighting issue I've also added a door to keep out the cold westerly wind coming off the Irish Sea

THe stores are coming on nicely.. Can I ask what gutters and downpipes you used?

The photo is from White Well which is about halfway up the side https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Wells The gutters are the ModelU system. It is pretty good for going around all sorts weird angles with various down pipe shapes which can all be separately ordered 4
SteamingWales
So life has been a little hectic of late with bad news and good news. The bad news has meant that I haven't been able to put more funds into the project of late hence all the bitty catch up modelling (although that's still important) I'm not in a position to share the good news yet but it is GOOD news Onto modelling. Looking to improve rolling stock I got out my black paint to improve the look of my two Standard 4s. I can see why some modellers do this as it does give them more weight and look less toy like with shiny tyres Another thing that I have sat on for ages is the coal stage where I replaced the main brick arches above the track but never properly painted or mortared them. Well not any longer Since first painting the coal stage and subsequently working on other buildings I have become unhappy with way the mortar looked on the coal stage with the structure looking very red and the mortar very faint. So rather than just do the arches the full stage has had another wash which has brought it more in line with the shed and stores brick work Happy modelling and hopefully next time I will be able to share the good news 15
MrWolf
Well done. I too have found that the one really important thing with a model railway is consistency. Consistency in colour, tone and detail / construction style and standards. Whether it's your main station building or a garden shed made from old doors. Only the weathering tends to vary by degree in real life. Those coaling plants make a fascinating centre piece of an entire layout even. 4 1
SteamingWales
Baseboard progress 💪 the left hand board now has back board and front fascia. I'm a out 75% of the way to getting the RH (based on photo) fiddle yard done with the LH to be worked on tomorrow Spring is definitely here too as I was out working in a t-shirt in the afternoon
MrWolf
Looking good and yes, I think that the season is finally turning in time for the equinox. We've been out motorcycling today without being wrapped up for the first time this year.
SteamingWales
Time to mark down this evening as a momentous occasion. This is the first section of track fully fixed in place and wired up. Now where is that DCC controller 🤔 5
SteamingWales
Damn side projects!!!! So I somehow got distracted and ended up buying 4 Cambrian GWR Ballast Hoppers So my grand plan was to build the wagons in a batch run so I do everything all together Only problem is after 3 hours I had the axle boxes and buffer beams fitted to them all and half the brake rigging fitted to one 😅 Hopefully now I know what I'm doing with the rigging I can crack on a bit faster! 8 1
MrWolf
I'm looking forward to batch building a heap o' wagons too. (Despite having a thousand other things that are works in progress.) But I find building wagons very therapeutic, plus I have a lot to get through. It's quite inspiring seeing a job coming along like this, thanks for the post. BTW, that bench looks disturbingly tidy. Are you sure that you're okay?

SteamingWales
A little more progress on the hopper with the end supports added. Unfortunately one of supports was damaged with no spares, but was easy enough to fix with some 1mm plasticard cut to the correct shape
SteamingWales
A rolling stock update that isn't Herring related! 6MT Seafarer has had a temporary shed transfer down to Neville Grove in Kent. I asked Steve to give her a shed clean look with this finish based on photos of 72007 on an RCTS tour. The work is now finished and she looks AMAZING 😍😍 These are just a selection of the 70 odd photos Steve shared (and happy to share more if anyone wants) And the reference image 👇👇
SteamingWales
So with a delivery of wood I have finished off the two fiddle yard with each end recieving end boards and cut the first hole. I was watching a video of Statfold Model Railway Exhibition which featured a layout called "Hackworth Engine Shed" http://hackworthmrg.co.uk/page18/ I've been thinking for a while how to tackle the side of the shed that sits on the main viewing side the layout The cut away seems a sensible option for Cambrian Shed too as it will Allo and will allow a good view into the shed as well. Any thoughts would be appreciated 5
RMweb Gold Graham T Posted April 7, 2023 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 7, 2023 Perhaps a removable wall and/or roof rather than an actual cut-away? 1
