The diesel depot at Canton featured the old northlight through shed as the 'Running Shed', and was used for fuelling, topping up coolant, battery charging and examining locos, and minor repairs.  More complex repairs took place in the new Maintenance Shed, which had a floor dropped below rail level so that inspection pits were not needed, platform access to locos at cab level, and space for an overhead gantry crane to remove engines and other large components; it was a tall building occupying the site of the steam roundhouses.  The stores, locker room, washrooms and showers, and admin block are a brick extension of this building.  These facilties are at the level of the SWML which passes the site to the north, and to the south, at the high level of the 'North Curve' and Barry routes, is a carriage shed, and, to the south of that, a 2-road dmu maintenance shed, with a fuelling point just past that serving 2 roads.

To the west of the main maintenance shed is a brick building which was used for full load testing of deisel electric locos, and to the west of the carriage shed is a building containing a wheel turning lathe.   Diesel fuel was delivered to the 'Taff Vale Sidings', just north of Ninian Park station.  The depot's breakdown crane and vans were stabled at the old steam coaling plant, as a steam crane remained in use here for many years.

Locos arriving at the shed were routed from the east, the direction of Cardiff Central Station, into 'loco recption no.1 road', accessed from a turnout in the down relief road.  A stop board indicates where locos are left to be handed over to the shed crews. Locos then proceeded towards the western end of the depot, from which they either ran in to the running shed or back towards the eastern end on a through road between the running and maintenance sheds, from which they are stabled in readiness for the next duty.  Locos can also arrive by 'reception no.2 road', which is from the eastern end of the carriage shed siding fan, or from the 'Leckwith end', a shunting neck common to all through roads from the sheds and carriage shed roads.  A ground frame here enables locos to leave the depot to proceed on to the down relief road, and thence the down SWML main, but this was rarely used.

Locos usually left from the shed outlet road, where there was a ground signal and a telephone to the panel signal box; the signal box could route it to any of the Central Station roads or sidings.  Another outlet road was fed from the carriage/dmu sidings, alongside an inlet road with a carriage washing machine.  This is still in use and TTBOMK the majority of the other buildings are still in situ, but are not in use.  The former Canton Sidings, on the up side of the GWML, is used for changing ends on main line trains returning to destinations to the east of Cardiff.

Sorry, got distracted a bit, yes, the storage tanks were fed from the 'Taff Vale Sidings' and fuel piped underground to the running shed and the dmu fuelling point.  In the early 70s the Taff Vale sidings were taking about 6 or 7 45ton tanks every day.  The Taff Vale sidings are still there, used for track relaying and ballasting machine storage.
