LNWR trains over the Rhymney Railway

As I understand it the LNWR had running powers over the Rhymney Railway and they had their own goods depot in Cardiff docks.  Where the running powers limited to only through goods trains?  Were they allowed to drop off or pick up wagons on the way?  What motive power was used post WW1?

Yes, good trains only. The late Gerald Davies showed me a slide of a coal tank which came to grief in a landslide. The Rhymney used a flat bottom rail with spikes - like in the USA - and this is thought why the LNWR 0-8-4T tanks were notorious for widening the gauge on the RR.  Super Ds also ran down the RR via Pontllanfraith, Hengoed and Ystrad M..

not to sure about pick ups. From the evidence they were straight through. The WTTs will help on that issue.

regards.

According the the 1915 RCH Junction Diagrams the LNWR running powers over the Rhymney were:

"Whole line except Aber, Penallta and Cylla branches -

Portion exercised as under -

Rhymney Junction - Cardiff LNWR Goods Branch Junction

for Merchandise"

Not strictly relevant but the LNWR also had running powers over the RR/GWR joint line between Merthyr Joint Line Junction and Castle pit, exercised between Cyfarthfa Level Crossing Junction and Castle Pit for Merchandise.

But of course that doesn't actually answer the question as to whether its trains called at intermediate stations.
