Agree with all of that Mike, except that the business sectors were created in 1982, not the latter half of the 80's.

Thanks. Maybe it was just that we didn't really notice them until then Mike as all they seem to have done initially was take over producing the commercial specs and programmes.   But some of those didn't come entirely from them as when  was i/c WR short term freight planning from 1986-89 the only important weekly programmes we got from the 'business' side were for stone and oil;  the Ince & Elton fertiliser programme came from the LMR at Crewe, and all our MoD stuff came direct from the MoD or from the originating Region for the train(s). concerned.

Infrastructure ownership of course wasn't transferred from the regions until the 1992 reorganisation after which we carried out a large 'escaping costs' (i.e cost transfer) programme with the other businesses.  That finally put a considerable amount of cost onto Inter City Special Services as certain facilities such as curves on triangles could only be identified as essential for turning steam locos although they might have a booked freight service (which could be re-routed to avoid that curve).

It seems that there were:

East Midlands Freight

West Midlands Freight

Yorkshire Freight

Humberside Freight

North West Freight

West Of England Freight

South Wales Freight

Anglia Freight

South East Freight

missing however the Scottish Areas....

The Tie I have said South Humberside Freight as Yorkshire Freight covered the Hull and Goole area

At Bescot we where known as "Trainload Freight West Midlands" . I was a trainman D at the time and I did a swop with a shunter from another local yard for one of their nifty orange and blue all weather rain jackets which had a Trainload freight West midlands logo on it .

Found a pic on Flickr of one of the mugs that was issued to staff at the time https://www.flickr.com/photos/63119375@N03/6613121155/sizes/l/ & https://www.flickr.com/photos/63119375@N03/6613121135/sizes/l/
