Theres plenty of cheaper secondhand Bachmann 57s, despite the toolding being older, be interesting to see how these do, but I suspect the tooling limitations will hurt the sales

I think this hits the nail on the head. The Bachmann offering is miles better, especially if you pick one up second hand which prices are favourable. All the liveries have been covered by Bachamnn except for the LSL black and newer West Coast Umber and Cream.

Interesting, as the old Heljan class 57s top lights did work.

It is interesting. 57311 has the light tube in place and the board has connections! I don't think it'll take too much to stick an SMD LED on the back of the light tube and wire to one the outputs. Maybe they removed it for the speaker area!?

It's actually so easy to add that I don't understand why Heljan omitted them. Underneath the ends of the boards are some JST 1.25mm sockets (just like the AUX10 and AUX7 ones). The ones for the W(hite) and R(ed) are used but the Cab and AUX1 (Aux2 at the other end) are not. All the circuitry is in place for those but I think AUX7 and AUX10 might need SW2 jumping (or switches in place) to work. I soldered an LED to a plug wire and plugged it in and, unsurprisingly, AUX1 and AUX2 work. All then needs doing is the LED mounting in behind the light tube. I didn't test the Cab connection but I suspect that they will be the same (they may be switched with the W(hate) LEDs but I didn't check that.

Replaced JST zh with 1.25mm as I had the wrong type

Here is 57311 with one end done for the lighting. I’ll include “inside” shots when I do the other end.

In summary, I:

- bridged the pads where switches could be fitted. This enables power feeds to the cab connectors and AUX7 and AUX10 connectors

- removed the tail lights by unplugging them and removing the SMDs

- added new dual SMDs to the tail light positions wiring them into AUX1 and the R connectors with new plugs

- printed a chassis mount to take the top light. Plugged that into the cab socket

- cut the headlight light tube and added  another SMD led to the night position. Used black tack to secure the SMDs and act as shrouds (might improve that). Plugged this into AUX7/(AUX10 depending on end)
