Prometheus
Is anyone able to post illustrations of each end of one of these Toplight Slips? I have not been able to find anything on-line to advise clearly re. details and fittings. Also, would the centre drop light frame at each end have been painted black like the rest of the end or left in mahogany? Many thanks to any who can assist! kada33
Hi Tony, There is an article in the May ed. of MRN 1953 on Double Slip no 7104 of 1909, this includes photos and a two page line drawing. PM me it is what you are looking for. Dave
RMweb Premium Neal Ball Posted November 11, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 11, 2022 There are two photos here, but they show conflicting drop lights! http://www.gwr.org.uk/slip-coach.html
RMweb Premium Siberian Snooper Posted November 11, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 11, 2022 I don't know about the 1st photo, but the 2nd one, the slip is in BR livery. HTH

bécasse
Both photos linked from Neal Balls' post show slip carriages painted in the short-lived BR Chocolate & Cream "principal WR train" livery which was only introduced in 1956. That livery specification specified that ends of carriages should be black but equally specified that droplights should be cream, obviously two different painters interpreted the resulting dilemma in different ways. There may well have been a similar dilemma under the previous BR Crimson & Cream livery, most photos that I have seen show a black droplight at the end but, of course, they may not be representative. Prometheus
My problem dates back to the 1927 livery! It seems that the droplight framing at the ends is black, but the very few photographs available are in vintage b&w, so it's difficult to tell. I'll keep digging, but I think that this one may remain unanswered definitively. Anyway, thanks for your reply. Miss Prism
I'd be inclined to go with mahogany for the GWR era, if only to be consistent with the end window bolections. 1
Prometheus
I agree and it’s the direction I was moving in. It would also provide a little relief to the otherwise black ends. Tony
