Hello  angry scots man ,are you new to scratch building modifying stock,if so your BUO looks very nice this will look superb once you have fitted the glazing and added decals!

Good evening Clive

I started scratch building when I was furloughed back in March 2020 (I was still an apprentice back then).  To fill in the time, I decided to just go for it and made a start on 99666.  This was after researching Newbryford’s thread and also from advice from Roland the year before.

I used the plasticard option and filler for the windows.  I went a bit different too and experimented with the blanks as I noted from pictures of 99666 that the blanked out windows were not completely flat.

I did enjoy making this and thought I would move on to others.  I do find that it adds a bit more to my hobby.

A new model I am working on is Radio Survey Coach 977868.  Following on from advice from Roland, I am using a Bachmann MK2F TSO as a donor.  The window blank with the frame was a new thing for me to try and took my time to ensure it was a near perfect fit.  The full blank was my first attempt of the other blank and was used.  Filler was applied last night and the slow process of sanding will begin.

Superb work with the window blanks. I have never been able to master cutting them out so opted for 3d printed ones off ebay.

Can i ask how you got on with the cally sleeper coach? Looking to have a go at one myself but not sure the besy way to graft the new sides to the donar.

When I received the BUO side prints, they were in 2 pieces.  But I believe LMSFan72 has managed to print in one piece now.  I thought it was fine to do, I did a night of measurement and doubled checked where to cut. I did cut less than what could of and carefully filed down the edges till I had a good fit and used model glue to give enough time to maintain fit.  I bought one of the small modelling saws to cut out the existing coach sides and took my time.

Advice is take your time, measure and look at the features and ensure a correct fit.  I usually spend a few nights before committing to cutting.

I am a lot better with the window blanks but still need to work on blanks that still have a window frame. Current effort after a spray of white paint shows a bad fitment, so that’s coming out and I will start on a new one.

February has been a very busy month, attending The Festival of British Railway Modelling in Doncaster and Model Rail Scotland in Glasgow helping out with KMS Railtech.  I did however make a start on a BUO with an Airfix Mk2d TSO and BSO.  I am having a go at Newbryford example, and after speaking to Roland I will also try his example.

I was also lucky enough to speak to Roland, and he checked over my current scratch builds.  All good to go and I will crack on with 977868.  I received a lot of advice too, so will have to crack on and get those other coaches finished for Perth.

Current effort with the BUO, still sanding the window blanks flush then add filler, then repeat sanding.

I have been working on the BUO this week, one side finished, starting on the other side.  There a few bits I want to smooth out but I think it looks good for my first cut and shut attempt.

I have also been working on a generator coach, 6264, from a Bachmann BG that I had sitting around.  One side done and @LMSfan72kindly designed the lourve/vents.  I know clapboard can be used but wanted to up the detail.  Fitted well, was maybe 1mm too short but that’s my fault on my part but it worked out and I think it looks very good.  I’m working on the other side before completing any fine detailing.

977868 is ongoing and Roland kindly made the bases for the radar.  They have been installed and grooves been sanded out (what are those grooves for?)

I need to get some styrene for the aerials which I will pick up at Ally Pally this weekend.  Away with KMS again to help out.  First time there so will be good to see.

I finished off Generator coach 6264 today.  A lot of modification including blanking out required doors/windows, cutting off roof vents and sanding flush and then reinstating blanks.  Cut out vents for the generators.

underframe detail, @LMSfan72 designed and printed out the fuel tanks and Roland guided me to eBay to get the dual air brake detail.  Coach ends, steps removed and new handrails added.  @LMSfan72 supplied the plugs.

Bachmann B4 bogies used, converted to B5 with Roland’s guidance.  Springs and axle boxes painted.

My thanks to Roland for his continual help and advice.

I am now moving on to 5981, if anyone has roof detail from this year (PLPR test train was in Aberdeen, at 2320 at night so did not get the best of videos) I am grateful.

Can have a look see if I have any notes on the B4 and B5 bogies in the work folder. Off the top of my head the bolster control rod is much heavier duty and everything is more heavy duty in comparison to the B4 in regards to suspension components. Only been on coaching stock once so my knowledge of  various coach specific components is limited.

one of the better ones from Flickr, had a look at the eye in the sky pics which where not very clear but did show that the various aerials are dead center straight along the roof of the coach.

Hi Jake

thanks for that.  There seems to be 3 vent style things (I’m sure they are not vents) on the roof now.  The photo is a crude screenshot of a video I took when 5981 was in Aberdeen, about 2320 on Saturday.

Hopefully someone will come out with a better picture soon.

Pretty much completed 977868, I modified the Bachmann MK2F chassis to a MK2E. I have to finish off adding other details once I am confident in scratch building underframe detail.

Currently working on 5981, it will be end of the month before I can see what those new box type things are on the roof.

Been a while, a lot has happened in my life since May.  I attended Perth MRC show with Fordoun Model Railway Clubs layout, Towns-End end of June which gave me the chance to run some of my stock.  Enjoyable weekend and first time I have been offered a wee dram by the organisers.

Modelling still continues, still working on 5981 roof detail and nearly finished my BUO.  Flying Scotsman was up in Aberdeen so this gave me the opportunity to photograph the support coach.  This was previously Union of South Africa’s support coach.  A weeks work on a Bachmann Mk1 BSK using updated braking from Midland Valenta and rail-etc transfers.  I am not happy with the extra box, this will get re done.
