My scratch-building attempts of the yellow nature!

Been a while, a lot has happened in my life since May.  I attended Perth MRC show with Fordoun Model Railway Clubs layout, Towns-End end of June which gave me the chance to run some of my stock.  Enjoyable weekend and first time I have been offered a wee dram by the organisers.

Modelling still continues, still working on 5981 roof detail and nearly finished my BUO.  Flying Scotsman was up in Aberdeen so this gave me the opportunity to photograph the support coach.  This was previously Union of South Africa’s support coach.  A weeks work on a Bachmann Mk1 BSK using updated braking from Midland Valenta and rail-etc transfers.  I am not happy with the extra box, this will get re done.

Very neat work, like your yellow output! Flying Scotsman visited Cornwall on 30th April and was the first locomotive to use St Blazey's turntable since its return to working order (I think some of the paint may still have been a little tacky!) Whilst watching its manoeuvres at Par station to position the support coach at the head of the train ready for departure eastwards I clocked the vehicle's running number 35486 and it seemed instantly familiar - I have a Bachmann BR maroon BSK at home numbered M35486 (ref. 39-076C). There were 1,500 BSKs......!

I believe the last 200 were built new with Commonwealth bogies - the Bachmann model came with B1s so when I had another on Commonwealths which needed B1s I did a swap which put them both right. It was this which made the number stick in the memory. Although that memory is pretty good with numbers anyway 😉!

I was away for a course this week, so the nights are free.  I started off adding Rail-tec 3D rivets to add some detail.  This hopefully replicates the bolt heads.  Once dry I used a Posca fine silver paint pen to add colour and white pen for the steps.

Just need to seal with a Matt varnish then start next one.

Great stuff, seen the real deal friday and reminded me I really need to get mine up to spec. Hopefully get a good covering of snow this year so they can finally turn a wheel in anger!Screenshot_20230819-231244_Gallery.jpg.72ab5b7f50bdcaaa8d521b8545559174.jpg

I would love to see them in action, missed out in 21 when they were in Huntly.  Hopefully a decent winter this year.

Week 2 of course soother one will be completed.  Just waiting on custom transfers from Rail tec so I can number the other one the same as the one that was at Huntly.

I shared my progress of FS Support coach with a Roland, and he reminded me that I still had to complete the roof.  All original vents cut away and marking up for new scalloped dome vents.  These very bought from Dart Castings.

Roland kindly sent me a picture, and having looked at photos of the support coach, layout is correct.

First 4 are in and I am surprised how straight they look.  Hopefully crack on with the rest this week.

I am down to GETS with KMS in October.  I have been told to consider taking my FS and support coach down to run on making tracks.

That’s me recovering after my first weekend at GETS, back to work for a rest (waiting on a line blockage).  I was helping out with KMS Railtech, and it was super busy.  I hardly managed to see any layouts bar Making Tracks and catching up with traders.  It was also good to meet @LMSfan72 and have a good chat too.  It’s always great to meet the folk behind these forums.

I did however manage to run my Flying Scotsman and Support Coach on the Saturday night.  I’m sure many of you know JohnClark568 on Instagram, he managed to arrange this and took on driver duties while I took photographs and video.  I felt 30 years younger during this.  Thanks to Pete Waterman and Chris for this, and of course John.

I found plenty of inspiration for Modelling WCRC Mk1 coaches which is a long term project.  I also had my thoughts on the Royal Scotsman coaches rekindled so I will have to go back research I have compiled and start a plan for them.

meanwhile on the bench I have another Mk2 Caledonian sleeper coach to complete and complete the 2nd ZZA snowplough.

Sadly the video I have is too large, so I assume I have to put it on youtube to add here.

Busy month for November with helping KMS Railtech with Falkirk model railway show and Warley, in between work as well.  Not a great deal of modelling has been done but with December in (returned to work a few days ago and been working 12 hour shifts plus on call!) I am hoping to get something done over Christmas.  My MK2 BUO is getting there, chassis very much completed except for steps.  Parts were obtained from an Airfix MK2E frame for the Bachmann chassis and Roland gave his approval along with a CET tank to complete the chassis.  I just need to drop off the body for painting into ex Caledonian colours by Johnclark568 when I see him.  I am quite pleased with it so far.

I also made progress with 5981 but the clot I am I forgot to take pictures.  I did however take some reference photos of Roland’s chassis to get me started.  He again kindly made me underframe parts to simulate the real thing.  I am using a Bachmann MK2F chassis.  Hopefully I can finish this off by the New Year and certainly by MRS 2024.

Here we go, pictures of progress with 5981 body.  Those new 3 things (anyone out there actually no what they are? I asked the crew when stopped at a station and they didn’t know!) might be underscale but unless anyone can get measurements it has to be guesstimate using the roof ribs.  I’m happy with it.

epic night shift, going to bed now 😴

time off over Xmas what's that! Asked the Derby lads about them when I was down and they also did not know. My best guess would be some for of antenna/modules for remote data sending? PLPR is coming along nicely as if the cally sleeper coach, both on my never ending to do list

wow! just caught up on this thread and your work is amazing! the attention to detail is great - first time i have seen anyone use a Bachmann MK2F for network rail conversions too which is nice to see! Some real great work and so much in a short space of time too!

I also really like the support coach, I too have this on my list of conversions! This has provided me with some great inspiration to get cracking with my Network Rail conversions now! thanks for sharing 😀

I know, first time I’ve been off for years!  Cheers for the comments, I’m hoping to have them both done for Glasgow for Roland to inspect.

Thanks for the comments.  I get a lot of advice from Roland for conversions and he suggested that I use the Bachmann MK2F body’s as they are only £23 on the Bachmann spares website.  It is questionable spending that money on a donor once you have purchased the chassis but for the extra detail it makes sense for me.

I’m no expert, I just like to attempt and see what I can do and I try to encourage others to do the same.  Slow and steady is the way.

Thanks on the support coach, it was one of those occasions where I could get close on track and take many reference photos (I work in the railway industry).  If required I can share.

Very impressive mate, certainly will be taking some inspiration from your work! May I ask, as I have missed it during the thread… who is this yoda like person you mention, Roland? He sounds incredibly knowledgeable 😃

Roland is a fantastic modeller, he has scratch-built many network rail coaches and locomotives to a replica and is a great inspiration.  As far as I know he only attends Falkirk model railway show and Model Rail Scotland up in Scotland.  He is not on RMWeb (although I’m sure he will see this) and doesn’t do social media.  Some of his models may appear on deadman’s lane.

@LMSfan72 is your guy, just message him and I'm sure he will be willing to help. Have quite a few of his kits to do myself.

@WCML100 I fully agree with @Shaun66, do message @LMSfan72 and he will be willing to help.  I met him at GETS in Milton Keynes this year and a very nice chap to speak to and has helped me with his prints and also the board change for Caroline.  All I ask is, like myself, he does work full time, so please give him a few days to answer messages.  You will not be disappointed.

He's always been helpful with any questions I've asked. I was also at GETS helping operate Gordons Lane.

Happy New Year all, hopefully all had a good time and achieved a bit of modelling.  I was quite lazy on that front as quite busy with family and I also received some sad news from a good friend.  But as he says keep pushing forward.  I was also asked to do a few extra days at work and I am a menace for saying no to overtime!

I managed some progress on 5981 this week with the two ends and one side receiving transfers from @railtec-models. I used 5mm Tamiya masking tape to try and keep them level rather that eyeball this time.  I also started the heavy modification of the Bachmann MK2F chassis ready for the parts to be installed from Roland.  If I am honest, actually enjoying the challenge and looking forward to the end product.

I am hopeful to complete my ZZA snowploughs too, just the other window blank to complete and add working light.
