Hard disk drive motors?

Can hard disk drive motors be used as an alternative source of 12v d.c.motors? Or am I thinking of cd drive motors?

I seem to recall it being CD drive motors - but I might be mistaken.

 

Saying that, I'd be surprised if someone hasn't found a use for HDD motors ... .

The really good motors, if you had room in your locomotive, were the ones that drove the eject system on DVD players. Quite apart from their quality, they got so little use they were still virtually brand-new when the rest of the player died.

For sure CD drive motor upgrade kits are widely available for Lima 'pancakes' on eBay; random example:-

The pancake motors I use in Lima Diesels came from Disc drives from computer towers not CD Players but its about 10 years since I salvaged them.
