Luke Piewalker
The Doon Valley Railway has run into an issue with the owner of some of their buildings putting them up for sale. They are at risk of losing their Ticket Office, Gift Shop, Customer Toilets, Exhibition and Artefacts Room, Volunteer Rest Room, Signal Box Cafe, Museum, Joiners & Metal Shop and the associated grounds surrounding this area. They are aiming to raise £250000 by the 31st of July to purchase the buildings and surrounding grounds. https://doonvalleyrailway.co.uk/
RMweb Premium Dava Posted March 9, 2023 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 9, 2023 I have donated, this is a very historic site and workshop, home of the Dalmellington Iron Company described in the epic history by David L Smith. The Doon Valley Railway keeps it alive. https://www.railscot.co.uk/companies/D/Dalmellington_Iron_Company/ Dava
pH
Donated as well. We think one branch of our family tree passed through there early on in the history of the Dalmellington Iron Company. DL Smith writes in that book that they recruited a lot of their workforce for the opening of the works from Ireland and the Highlands. My great-great-grandfather was born in Perth in 1823. When his son, my great-grandfather, was born in Dalmellington in 1856, his occupation was recorded as ‘iron moulder’. We assume he was one of those hired for the opening of the ironworks in 1848.
