Guest Jack Benson
In addition to Pottendorf, there is a micro-diorama lurking in the back of the workshop, no more than 1m long and just 0.22m deep, it is just a turnout and three bits of track. Its purpose is to keep me amused at exhibitions because I can just about lug it about using a Lidl’s lightweight sack truck. The theme of the diorama is a corner of the industrial rail system that once joined the gasworks and inland port in Bamberg. The gasworks was demolished many years ago but Bayernhafen Bamberg is a thriving industrial site employing 13,000 in over 400 companies on-site. Researching the subject has been challenging, the Bamberg archive tends to favour the magnificent buildings rather than the industrial heritage, some logical imagination is needed. This link to a map of the system the electrical industrial shunter seen in the link was still on-site in 1986 when we visited. A tramway is a possibility but the lack of suitable HO steeple cab, instead a BR89.7-8 as seen in the blog and a V36 diesel shunter will suffice for the time being.
