Painting etched brass.

I was wondering what people use to prime any etched brass parts i.e., roof grills etc fitted to locos. I've had some paint chip off a grill after priming with a Vallejo primer then enamel over the top, even though I've read reviews that say it can be used to prime metal. I've also tried Mr Metal primer but it does not seem to work too well with brass.

I use an etch primer you can pick a can up from most car spares shop. Just make sure the surface is clean before you spray as this will effect the paint sticking.

My go to primer, for all materials is Halfords aerosol primer, always good results, as above make sure clean of grease etc. fingers will leave grease behind.

Thank you, I've heard good things about Halfords stuff. 

How do you deal with small parts added on without wanting to re spray the whole loco, is there a suitable brush applied primer?

Spray a small amount of the aerosol into the lid, and dip your brush in that.

My solution to add on brass parts and priming is to chemically blacken them. This effectively primes them and then a "model" primer can be used on completion.
