LMSfan72
Working out the wiring runs for the lights. I used a tower for the top marker but wired SMDs in the WIPAC clusters:
LMSfan72
I only lit one end of the sleeper because I am using the standard Dapol electronics and I wanted day and night options. I forgot to paint the insides of the WIPACs to prevent light bleed. I may remove them and do that at some point! LMSfan72
I'm trying, this weekend, to finish detailing the Sleeper version. I've printed a locator for the original circuit board and installed that for the operational lighting, I am printing nose cables and a radiator fan and have a new grill attempt! I'm also shrinking the aerials on the cab so some touch up required there too. I'm aiming to have a presentable finished loco by the end of next week! In parallel I've got to do the same for the GBRF one, albeit with a different operational lighting configuration, and am hoping that @railtec-models will be able to help out with the body side lettering. I'll add photos as I go!

LMSfan72
Cable and fan and grill Since I am doing the version for use with the mk5 coaches I also needed to do the Dellner coupling. Cut down version of the Accurascale magnetic one in the retracted position:

LMSfan72
Happy with snowplough now This is the chassis mounted one. The bogie mounted one looks good too, just waiting for the paint to dry on that….. … speaking of which, I will have to retouch the yellow front after all this fiddling about!

The Angry Scotsman
Well done, some great design work to produce a locomotive for the Mk5 sleeper coaches 👍
LMSfan72
Second sleeper on the way. I have also now printed a jig to help with putting the body shell back together. it takes about 3 minutes to cut the cabs off and I then fit them to the jig and super glue the new body section in place at the roof level. I then use epoxy for the rest of the join and if needed glue paper inside to reinforce. Really easy as a modification now!! Once primed I can fill and clean the join line….
LMSfan72
On 16/03/2024 at 07:20, LMSfan72 said: All my coach models are designed so that the body “locks” into a chassis - or are single piece - to combat any distortion that happens over time. I am concerned that as the 73 is an open shell it may distort. I am being asked if I will sell the prints but because of this risk I am hesitant to do that. I am considering if another option is to print the entire roof and then the side grills/louvres separately so that an existing shell does form the “skeleton” - back to how I was doing it in earlier posts. I will finish a test model and we can see if it distorts!! I am pretty sure I have designed out any distortion issues and I now have a jig to help build. If anyone is interested in a 73/9 conversion kit still, just reach out by PM!
LMSfan72
Steve @railtec-models has just released the bodyside details for the GBRF 73/9 https://www.railtec-models.com/showitem.php?id=11350 Hopefully I’ll be able to get the first of these finished by this time next week!! LMSfan72
I tried to hand paint the detail on my first sleeper and wasn’t that happy with my results. This time I masked and airbrushed, very lightly, and am much more pleased I also decided to edge the roof grill with paper
LMSfan72
I learnt a lot on the first builds, not least of which how difficult it was to get the LEDs in place. I had a “eureka” moment overnight and have tried a 2 piece WIPAC for this one. The LED will fit in the WIPAC base and the cover is recessed to take the full lens. They will only get glued in once I have painted the yellow ends.
LMSfan72
The GBRF one is getting there now…. This will become either 73963 or 73962. The latter needs the emergency ladder bracket fitting to above the AAR multiple working socket so I am working on one of those! I didn’t think I’d be able to print the pipes and brackets, but, I have to say I’m happy with last nights design!

LMSfan72
Having spent more time on the WIPACs getting them better for fitting LEDs I decided that this one will be wired to a Loksound chip with at least 10 functions to control more light modes at both ends. put back on its jig whilst I wait for supplies!
