And you now have a day to learn if before you start doing it on a dark night in a poorly lit yard while the rain is running down the back of your neck!   Hiwever in lots of instances it was much simpler than the systems which had preceded it and the day of the BWU (Basic Wagin Unit) was ended after. a faitly short life.  

 

And 5/6 years later when TOPS came along it took over a lot (ultimately all) of the caklculating work for you and removed the need to go round looking at wagon labels, the job became massively easier.

Yes, TOPS made departures from many yards and some terminals easier with the issuing of completed trainlists/drivers slip but many freight workings then relied on the completion of a manual trainlist/drivers slip once they had reformed, emptied, loaded, attached or detached en route, at locations without access to TOPS. Throughout the 1980s this was the situation around the Peak District and a significant part of a freight guard's role.
